Chapter 3 - THE FORENSIC WEAPON

Within forty minutes, three unmarked black SUVs pulled up the long winding driveway of the Vance estate. Arthur stepped out first, his tall, silver-haired frame radiating authority. Behind him came two specialists carrying locked metal cases, alongside Marcus Sterling, a formidable former federal prosecutor turned elite private defense lawyer.

I met them at the front doors and led them directly into the study. I handed Marcus the sealed plastic evidence bag containing the bottle of white capsules, while Arthur inserted a duplicate copy of the MicroSD card into his secure tablet.

For twenty minutes, the room was silent except for the low hum of testing equipment set up on my father’s desk and the sound of my husband’s recorded voice playing through Marcus’s headphones.

The senior toxicologist, Dr. Vance Chen, finally looked up from his portable mass spectrometer. His expression was grave.

“Mrs. Vance,” Dr. Chen said softly. “It’s fortunate you didn’t take even a single one of these tonight. Each capsule contains a lethal cocktail of concentrated belladonna alkaloids, flunitrazepam, and a heavy synthetic sedative. Taking one would render you paralyzed within fifteen minutes and stop your respiratory system within two hours. To an uncritical examiner, it would present precisely as acute cardiac arrest brought on by substance interaction.”

Marcus removed his headphones, his face dark with fury. “This isn’t just domestic abuse or corporate fraud, Adrianna. This is premeditated attempted murder with explicit conspiracy charges attached to both David and his mother. The audio file is clear, unedited, and provides direct intent.”

“Can we arrest them right now?” I asked.

“We could notify the federal authorities immediately,” Marcus explained. “However, if we issue an arrest warrant now, David’s legal contacts might alert him before he reaches his destination. He’s currently driving to his mother’s estate in upstate New York. If he realizes the plot is blown, he could destroy financial trail documents, liquidate offshore holding accounts he may have set up under your company’s name, or worse, try to flee the jurisdiction.”

“What do you suggest?”

“We set a trap,” Marcus said, a cold smile touching his lips. “David believes you are going to take the first pill tonight. He expects to receive a frantic call from Whitney tomorrow morning declaring that you were found unresponsive in bed. We give him exactly what he expects—until he walks through that front door to claim his prize.”

At that moment, the door to the study opened softly. Owen stepped inside, holding Whitney’s hand tightly.

Arthur gasped, stepping forward. “Owen...”

Owen looked up at Arthur, then at Marcus. He swallowed hard, taking a brave step into the room.

“Uncle Arthur,” Owen said, his voice stronger now, though still delicate. “Dad has a safe... in the basement behind the wine rack. He mixes the powders there.”

Arthur sank to his knees, eyes wide with emotion. “Owen... you’re speaking, son?”

“I had to save Mom,” Owen said simply, holding my hand again. “He has a black notebook in the safe. He wrote down the dates he put things in Mom’s tea.”

Marcus stood up immediately. “A written ledger of administration. If that notebook exists, it transforms this case from a complex forensic battle into an airtight conviction.”

We immediately moved down to the wine cellar. Hidden behind a heavy oak paneling system was a concealed electronic safe. Using details Owen remembered watching his father input, Marcus’s security technicians bypassed the digital keypad within ten minutes.

The safe door clicked open.

Inside lay a black leather-bound diary, three additional vials of chemical compounds, and legal documents detailing a fraudulent power-of-attorney proxy that David had forged using my simulated signature. He had planned to assume full voting control of Vance Global’s board the moment I was declared deceased or incapacitated.

“He thought of everything,” I whispered, staring at the forged signature.

“Except the courage of his son and the loyalty of your household,” Arthur said, laying a firm hand on my shoulder. “Now, Adrianna, it’s time to take back your life.”
