Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT BEFORE THE CONFRONTATION

That night, for the first time in seven years, Owen slept in my room. He curled up beside me, holding my hand tightly as if anchoring himself to reality. Without the toxic micro-doses of chemicals in my system, my mind felt remarkably sharp, clear, and focused. The brain fog that had haunted me for months had begun to lift, exposing the full clarity of the reality around me.

I stayed awake for hours, watching the gentle rise and fall of my son’s chest. I thought about how close I had come to taking that white pill. If Owen hadn’t found the courage to break his seven years of silence, I would have died in this very bed, and my child would have been left at the mercy of two monsters.

At 6:00 AM, the sun began to rise over the estate, casting warm golden light across the gardens. Outside, hidden in the tree lines and unbranded vans parked down the private drive, law enforcement teams were fully deployed.

Arthur, Marcus, and the lead police detective, Captain Miller, gathered in the kitchen with Whitney.

“Alright, Whitney,” Captain Miller said, placing a recording phone on the counter. “Remember the script. Speak frantically. Tell him Mrs. Vance won’t wake up, and that you’ve called an ambulance. Keep it under forty seconds so he doesn’t have time to ask detailed questions.”

Whitney took a deep breath, nodded, and dialed David’s private cell number.

The phone rang three times before David answered. His voice sounded groggy, but there was an unmistakable undercurrent of eager anticipation.

“Whitney? Why are you calling so early?”

“Mr. David!” Whitney cried, her voice trembling with simulated panic. “It’s Mrs. Adrianna! I went to bring her morning tea, but she won’t wake up! She’s cold, Mr. David! I called emergency services, but you need to come back right away!”

There was a brief pause on the line—a moment where David was undoubtedly celebrating his victory.

“What?! Oh my God... Adrianna!” David feigned shock, his voice rising in manufactured grief. “Did she take her medication last night? Whitney, stay calm! I’m leaving upstate right now! Don’t touch anything in the room!”

“Please hurry!” Whitney sobbed, hanging up the receiver.

Captain Miller immediately gave a sign to his tactical team. “He took the bait. Cell phone tracking shows his vehicle is already en route from the highway. He was staying at a hotel less than forty miles away, waiting for this exact call. ETA is thirty-five minutes.”

I stood up, wearing a simple tailored dark suit, my hair pulled back neatly. I looked composed, formidable, and entirely in control.

“Adrianna,” Arthur said gently. “You don’t have to be in the main room when they take him down. You can stay upstairs with Owen.”

“No, Arthur,” I replied, my voice steady as stone. “I want him to look into my eyes the moment he realizes his entire life is over.”
