Chapter 9 - Whispers of the Past

Two years passed.

Leo was now nine, tall, intelligent, and confident. Maya was six, a bright, spirited young girl who brought light into every corner of our lives.

The Moretti estate was no longer a grim fortress guarded by silent enforcers in black suits. It had become a warm, welcoming home filled with children's artwork pinned to the refrigerator, bicycles parked near the garage, and the constant sound of laughter.

I had fully settled into my role as the Chief Executive Officer of Moretti Holdings, a billion-dollar legitimate real estate and logistics corporation. My name was now spoken in corporate boardrooms and charity galas rather than dark alleys.

However, life has a way of testing the foundations we build.

On a rainy afternoon in March, Arthur entered my office at Moretti Holdings headquarters in downtown Austin. His expression was serious.

"Thomas, we have an issue regarding Ethan's old company, Vance-Moretti Defense Tech," Arthur said, placing a folder on my desk.

"What kind of issue?"

"As you know, Ethan's company held proprietary patents for advanced military drone navigation systems—patents that were placed in a blind trust for Leo until his eighteenth birthday," Arthur explained. "A rival defense contractor, Apex Global, has filed an aggressive hostile takeover bid, trying to invalidate the trust and seize control of Ethan's patents."

I narrowed my eyes. "Who runs Apex Global?"

"Marcus Vance," Arthur revealed. "Rebecca's older brother."

I leaned back in my leather chair. Marcus Vance was a former hedge fund manager who had fled to Europe five years ago following a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into insider trading. He had returned to the US using offshore capital, seeking to claim what he believed was his sister's rightful share of Ethan's legacy.

"Marcus thinks that because I walked away from my old life, I've lost my teeth," I said quietly.

"He's hired a team of ruthless corporate raiders and bribed two members of the board," Arthur added. "They've scheduled an emergency shareholder vote for tomorrow morning to liquidate the trust."

I stood up, adjusting my tie. "Marcus wants to play corporate chess with my brother's legacy. He's about to learn that leaving the underworld didn't make me weak—it just made me smarter."

That evening, I didn't send men with guns to Marcus Vance's hotel room. I didn't break any laws. Instead, I unleashed the full power of legitimate, devastating financial warfare.

I spent six hours in my study working with Arthur and our corporate intelligence team. By midnight, we had uncovered Marcus Vance's entire financial structure: his offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands, his illegal tax evasion schemes, and the fact that his buyout offer for Apex Global was funded by money laundered through Eastern European banks.

The next morning at 9:00 AM, the board of directors of Vance-Moretti Defense Tech convened in the top-floor boardroom of a downtown skyscraper.

Marcus Vance sat at the head of the conference table, wearing an expensive suit, looking arrogant and victorious.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Marcus announced to the board members. "Today we vote to dissolve the legacy trust and integrate our patents into Apex Global. The Moretti family is no longer capable of managing these high-level assets."

The double doors of the boardroom swung open.

I walked into the room, dressed in a bespoke dark suit, flanked by Arthur Vance and two federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Marcus' smirk vanished. "Thomas Moretti... you have no standing at this meeting."

"I have every standing, Marcus," I said calmly, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table. "I am the legal guardian of the majority shareholder, Leo Moretti. And as of eight o'clock this morning, Moretti Holdings acquired a controlling sixty-one percent interest in Apex Global's parent company."

Marcus turned pale. "What? That's impossible!"

"It was quite easy," Arthur chimed in smoothly, handing folders to every board member. "We purchased your debt from your primary European creditors. Mr. Moretti is now your primary lender. And these gentlemen from the SEC are here to execute an arrest warrant for money laundering and fraud."

The two federal agents stepped forward, pulling out hand cuffs.

Marcus stared at me in horror as the agents pulled him from his chair. "You're a mobster, Moretti! You can't do this!"

I looked at him with cold detachment. "My brother Ethan built this company with honesty and vision to secure his children's future. You tried to steal from an orphan, Marcus. In my old life, you wouldn't have survived the night. In my new life, you will spend the next fifteen years in federal prison. Count yourself lucky."

As Marcus was led out of the boardroom in cuffs, the remaining board members sat in stunned silence.

I stood up, resting my hands on the table, looking at each of them. "Vance-Moretti Defense Tech will remain intact. The patents will stay in trust for my nephew. And if anyone else on this board ever considers compromising Ethan Moretti's legacy, remember today."

The vote to dissolve the trust was canceled unanimously within two minutes.
