Chapter 5 - The War for Westlake

The attack on the truck was a declaration of war. Liam O'Connor thought he could pressure me into a quick settlement by striking at my logistics network. He thought my focus was split between raising two children and managing a mob war.

He was wrong. My focus had never been sharper.

That evening, after Leo and Maya were asleep under the watchful eye of two pediatric nurses and four perimeter guards, I convened a war council in the subterranean bunker beneath my estate.

Arthur, Marco, Frank, and five of my top crew captains sat around a large oak table. Maps of Austin were projected onto the wall, highlighting O'Connor's territory, shipping hubs, and illegal operations.

"O'Connor hit Truck 14 at 5:00 PM," Marco reported, pointing to a red marker on the map. "They stole forty crates of high-end electronics and shot the driver in the shoulder. The driver will survive, but O'Connor is sending a message."

"What's the message?" Frank growled, rubbing his massive fists.

"He thinks Thomas is tied down by the kids," Arthur explained. "He believes if he creates enough chaos, the Moretti syndicate will look weak, and our business partners will pressure Thomas to hand over Ethan's shares to restore peace."

I sat at the head of the table, my hands folded. "Liam wants a war of attrition. He wants to hit us in the streets and draw out a bloody conflict that attracts federal attention. We aren't going to give him that."

"What's the play, Boss?" Marco asked.

"We strike his heart," I said calmly. "Liam's power doesn't come from his street soldiers. It comes from his corrupt connections at the Port of Houston and his central money laundry—the Grand Marquis Casino club downtown. We dismantle both in forty-eight hours."

Arthur leaned forward. "Thomas, hitting the Grand Marquis will break every unspoken rule we have with the other Texas families."

"Liam broke the rules when he targeted my dead brother's estate," I replied coldly. "Frank, take eight men and shut down his Houston port operations. Intercept his incoming shipments. Seize everything."

"With pleasure," Frank grinned.

"Marco," I continued. "Obtain the ledger files from the Grand Marquis. Liam keeps his political bribe records in a safe behind the main vault. Get those records to Arthur. Arthur will leak them anonymously to the State Attorney General."

"And what about Liam himself?" Marco asked.

"Once his money is gone and his political shields are destroyed, Liam will come to us," I said. "And when he does, we finish this."

Over the next three days, my estate operated under two completely different realities.

By night, I coordinated a ruthless campaign that systematically dismantled Liam O'Connor's criminal empire. We seized three of his contraband shipments at the port, froze five of his offshore accounts through legal injunctions managed by Arthur, and leaked damning evidence of political corruption that led to federal raids on his primary headquarters.

By day, I was Uncle Thomas.

I woke up every morning at six to have breakfast with Leo and Maya. I learned how to make pancakes shaped like Mickey Mouse—a skill that took four failed attempts and a near-disaster with the griddle before Maya finally giggled and declared them "yummy."

I sat with Leo during his physical therapy sessions. The doctor had given him exercises to rebuild the muscular strength in his damaged leg. The process was painful, and tears often rolled down the boy's face as he worked to bend his stiff knee.

"It hurts, Uncle Thomas," Leo sobbed one afternoon, clutching his leg in the estate's therapy room. "I don't want to do it."

I knelt beside his wheelchair, taking his small hand. "I know it hurts, Leo. But remember what we talked about? Pain is just your body getting stronger. Every time you push through it, you're taking another step away from the dark."

Leo wiped his nose with his sleeve. He looked at me, his young face showing a grit that reminded me so much of my brother Ethan. "If I do ten more, can we build the Lego castle?"

"If you do ten more, we build the castle and eat ice cream for dinner," I bargained.

"Deal," Leo gritted his teeth and pushed through the final repetitions.

Watching him fight so hard to heal gave me a sense of purpose I had never known in my decades of running the Moretti crime family. For years, my life had been defined by power, control, and survival. But standing in that room, watching Leo smile through his pain, I realized that true strength wasn't about making men fear you. It was about protecting the innocent people who trusted you with their lives.

On Friday afternoon, Sarah Jenkins made her first unannounced visit.

She arrived unannounced at 2:00 PM. I was in the living room, sitting on the carpet with Maya, covered in pink feather boas and plastic tiaras while we held a pretend tea party. Leo was at the coffee table nearby, working on his Lego set.

When the butler escorted Sarah into the room, I didn't scramble to hide the ridiculous outfit. I simply put down my plastic teacup and stood up.

"Ms. Jenkins," I said smoothly, adjusting my pink boa. "Welcome."

Sarah stopped in her tracks. Her sharp, stern eyes took in the scene: the mob boss of Austin wearing a feather boa, a little girl laughing on a plush rug, and a young boy happily building toys in a sunlit room filled with fresh flowers.

She blinked, trying to reconcile the terrifying reputation of Thomas Moretti with the man standing before her.

"Mr. Moretti," she said slowly. "I see I caught you in the middle of a... high-level meeting."

"The most important meeting of my day," I replied without a trace of embarrassment.

Maya ran over and grabbed Sarah's hand. "Miss Sarah! Look! Uncle Thomas is the Princess of Tea!"

A rare, soft smile touched Sarah's lips. She crouched down to Maya's eye level. "Is he a good princess, Maya?"

"The best!" Maya beamed. "He gave me strawberries and let me play with the big bear!"

Sarah stood up and walked over to Leo. She inspected his leg cast and looked at his therapy log resting on the table. She saw the detailed notes left by the physical therapist, documenting his daily progress.

"How are you feeling, Leo?" Sarah asked gently.

"My leg hurts sometimes, but Uncle Thomas says I'm brave," Leo said proudly. "And we're going to go to the zoo when my cast comes off!"

Sarah spent an hour inspecting the estate, speaking with the nurses, and reviewing the children's psychological progress reports. Before she left, she stood with me by the front door.

"I'll be honest with you, Mr. Moretti," Sarah said, holding her briefcase. "When I took this case, I expected to find a grand house filled with armed thugs and neglected kids used as photo ops for your legal defense. I was prepared to remove them today."

"And now?"

"Now I see two children who are finally starting to feel safe," she said quietly. "Your background still concerns me, Thomas. The state will not ignore who you are if a war erupts in the city. But right now... this is the best place for them."

She turned and walked out to her car.

As I watched her drive away, Frank Castle approached me, his expression grave.

"Boss," Frank whispered. "Liam O'Connor's entire organization is collapsing under the federal raids. He's desperate. He just pulled thirty of his hardest guys from Houston. They're gathering at his estate in Dripping Springs."

"He knows he's lost," I said, taking off the feather boa. "Desperate men do foolish things."

"What are your orders?"

I looked back inside at Leo and Maya. "Call Marco. Tell him to assemble the entire crew. Tonight, we end the O'Connor family once and for all."
