Chapter 8 - Building a New Foundation

With the trial over and the threats eliminated, a new challenge began: transforming from a man of the underworld into a true father figure for two growing children.
I knew that protecting Leo and Maya meant more than just keeping them safe from physical harm. It meant giving them a normal, healthy future. And to do that, I had to make radical changes in my own life.
One evening in late autumn, I called Arthur Vance and Frank Castle into my study.
"I am stepping down from active leadership of the Moretti organization," I announced, placing a signed legal document on the desk.
Arthur stared at me in shock. "Thomas... you're forty-two years old. You built this empire. The captains won't easily accept a transition."
"They will accept it because we are restructuring," I explained. "We are selling off all contested logistics operations, closing down our gray-market investments, and transitioning our entire portfolio into legitimate commercial real estate, clean tech, and global logistics funds. Arthur, you will oversee the legal division of Moretti Enterprises. Frank, you will transition our security force into a licensed private security firm."
Frank grinned slowly. "A legitimate security firm? That means we get higher contracts and fewer federal headaches."
"Exactly," I said. "Ethan spent his life trying to escape the shadows. I won't allow his children to grow up under the dark cloud of my reputation. From this day forward, the Moretti name stands for clean business."
Over the next six months, the transition was executed with ruthless efficiency. Uncooperative elements within the organization were bought out or retired, while our core assets were converted into fully legal, highly profitable enterprises. The FBI surveillance teams that had followed me for a decade eventually scaled down their operations, realizing the Moretti family was no longer operating outside the law.
Meanwhile, at home, my days became filled with the beautiful, chaotic rhythm of raising kids.
Leo turned seven in November. We celebrated his birthday with a massive party at the estate. His leg had healed so well that he was able to run across the lawn, chasing a soccer ball with his new friends from school. He had been enrolled in a prestigious private academy in Austin, where he excelled in mathematics and science, inheriting his father Ethan's brilliant mind.
Maya turned four in January. She was a bundle of endless energy, filling the halls of the estate with laughter and song. She took ballet lessons twice a week and proudly performed her wobbly pirouettes for me in the living room every evening.
One Saturday afternoon, Sarah Jenkins made her final official visit to the estate.
We sat on the stone patio overlooking the swimming pool, watching Leo teach Maya how to throw a foam football across the grass.
Sarah held a thick document in her hands—the final legal recommendation for permanent adoption and custody.
"I've been in child protective services for fifteen years, Thomas," Sarah said, sipping her tea. "I've seen hundreds of homes. I came here expecting to find a gilded cage. Instead, I found a family."
She handed me the document. Across the top page, in bold red ink, was stamped: RECOMMENDED FOR FULL PERMANENT GUARDIANSHIP AND ADOPTION.
"You sacrificed your entire lifestyle for them," Sarah smiled warmly. "You legitimizing your businesses, stepping away from the underworld... that isn't something a mob boss does for legal show. That's something a father does."
"I made a promise to my brother," I said softly, looking at the children playing in the sun. "And I made a promise to them."

"Well, Mr. Moretti," Sarah stood up, offering her hand. "The court will grant the final adoption order next week. You are officially their legal father."
I shook her hand, feeling an overwhelming warmth settle in my heart—a feeling far richer than any power or wealth I had amassed in my previous life.
