Chapter 4 - The Web Unravels

Detective Vance swept into action. Because financial fraud and potential murder-for-hire crossed state lines, federal authorities were brought in. By noon, I found myself sitting in an interrogation room at the Columbus police precinct, not as a suspect, but as the primary witness.
Across the hall, behind two-way glass, sat the woman I had shared a bed with for over a decade. She looked utterly detached, her arms crossed, refusing to answer any questions without an attorney present. But her attorney hadn't shown up—because the legal representative she requested didn't exist in the state directory.
An FBI Special Agent named Sarah Hayes joined Detective Vance in my room. She placed a heavy manila folder on the metal table between us.
"Mr. Vance," Agent Hayes began, her voice calm and authoritative. "Your wife’s real name is Katherine Miller. Twelve years ago, she was an accountant for a high-level organized crime syndicate operating out of Detroit. When the syndicate fell under federal indictment in 2011, $4 million went missing from their slush fund. Katherine vanished at the same time."
I stared at the folder, my mind struggling to bridge the gap between the woman who baked cupcakes for Sofia’s school rallies and an international fugitive.
"She took the money?" I asked.
"She took part of it," Hayes corrected. "The rest was stashed. She assumed a dead woman's identity—Elena Rossi—and laid low. She met you. You were a respectable software engineer with clean credit, a stable family, and no criminal ties. You were the ultimate camouflage."
"Camouflage..." The word stung like acid. Eleven years of marriage, holidays, vacations, the birth of our daughter—all of it was just an elaborate mask to hide a criminal fleeing from both the law and the mob.
"Why now?" I demanded. "Why try to kill me today?"
"Because the man in the gray sedan wasn't hired by her," Agent Hayes said grimly. "He was hired for her."
I blinked. "What?"
"The mob finally tracked Katherine down two months ago," Hayes explained. "They found out where she was living. They made a deal with her: hand over the remainder of the stolen money, plus interest—which amounted to your entire life savings, your house's equity, and your life insurance—or they would kill her and her family. Katherine decided to play them against you."

"She staged it," I said, the horrific puzzle finally snapping together. "She told the mobster to come into the house at 4:00 AM to kill me while I slept, making it look like a home invasion gone wrong. Then she was going to frame me as a desperate man who owed money, while she took the rest of the cash and vanished, leaving the mob satisfied that the 'account was settled.'"
"She was going to sacrifice you to save herself," Agent Hayes confirmed softly. "And if your daughter hadn't woken up at 3:00 AM, you would be dead right now, Mr. Vance."
