Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

Two years later.

The morning sun rose over the Atlantic Ocean, casting a warm, golden glow across our living room. The air smelled of salt water, fresh pine, and baking blueberry pancakes.

I stood at the kitchen stove, flipping pancakes, while Barnaby sat patiently at my feet, waiting for a dropped piece of bacon.

Footsteps patted down the stairs.

Sofia walked into the kitchen, wearing her favorite bright yellow hoodie and sneakers. She was eight years old now, taller, stronger, and full of confidence. Her eyes sparkled with happiness.

"Good morning, Daddy!" she said, giving Barnaby a quick rub behind the ears before hopping onto the barstool at the kitchen island.

"Good morning, hero," I smiled, sliding a plate of hot pancakes in front of her. "Big day today. Ready for the regional soccer championship?"

"I'm gonna score two goals today," she announced proudly, pouring syrup over her plate. "At least two."

"I don't doubt it for a second," I laughed, coming around the counter to give her a forehead kiss.

I looked out the kitchen window at the sparkling ocean water in the distance. The terror of that 4:00 AM wake-up call, the sirens, the hidden guns, and the chase through the dark alley felt like a distant, bad dream from another lifetime.

We had lost the life we thought we knew, but in its place, we had built something far realer, built entirely on genuine love, trust, and courage.

Sofia finished her breakfast and wiped her mouth with a napkin. She looked up at me with a big, bright smile.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah, Sofia?"

"I'm really glad you listened to me that night."

I walked over, wrapped my arms around her, and pulled her into a warm, safe hug. The sun beamed through the window, wrapping us both in light.

"Me too, baby," I whispered. "Me too."
