Chapter 1 - The Midnight Escape

My six-year-old daughter woke me at 4:03 in the morning with both shoes already tied.
“Daddy… we have to go. Right now. Don’t tell anything to Mom.”
At first, I thought Sofia had had a nightmare. My wife, Elena, was still asleep beside me, breathing steadily under the blanket.
“Why?” I whispered.
Sofia’s eyes filled with tears.
“There’s no time. Please.”
Something in her voice made me stop asking questions.
I grabbed my keys, wallet, phone, and jacket. Sofia took my hand, and we slipped downstairs. I unlocked the side door as quietly as possible.
The moment we stepped outside, the security light came on.
And that was when it happened.
A man rose from behind Elena’s SUV.
He wore jeans, a dark sweatshirt, and latex gloves.
For half a second, none of us moved.
Then Sofia screamed.
The man rushed toward us.
I shoved Sofia behind me and slammed the side door with my shoulder, locking it from outside with the key. The stranger changed direction instantly and sprinted toward a gray sedan parked across the street.
I pulled out my phone.
“Daddy, no!” Sofia cried. “He’ll tell Mom!”
The sedan disappeared around the corner.
My hands were shaking.
“Sofia, who was that?”
She stared at the upstairs bedroom window.
“I don’t know his name.”
“How did you know he was outside?”
She swallowed.
“Because Mom told him where to wait.”
Everything inside me went cold.
Sofia said she had woken around three because she needed water. On her way downstairs, she heard Elena speaking softly in the kitchen.
Sofia hid behind the hallway wall.
“She said, ‘He sleeps heavy. Come at four. Use the side door.’”
I stared at her.
“What else?”
Sofia began crying.
“Mom said you would look like you ran away.”
I immediately called 911.
While I was giving our address in suburban Columbus, Ohio, a light appeared upstairs.
Our bedroom light.
Then Elena stepped to the window.
She saw us standing beside my truck.
Her face changed.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Anger.
She disappeared from the window.
Seconds later, I heard the deadbolt turning inside the house.
Sofia squeezed my fingers.
“Daddy…”
The side door opened.
Elena stood there wearing a robe.
In her right hand was my passport.
In her left was a plastic evidence bag containing something I had never seen before.
A handgun.
She looked directly at Sofia.
“What did you tell him?”
Behind us, sirens began getting louder.
May you like
Elena’s expression collapsed.
And for the first time in eleven years of marriage, I realized I had absolutely no idea who my wife really was.
