Chapter 5 - The Corporate Takeover

Detective Vance walked briskly up the driveway, his breath pluming in the cold morning air as he approached the front porch where Nathan and I stood. He held a crisp, laminated document in a transparent plastic folder.
“Mr. Nathan Reed?” Vance asked, his voice professional and authoritative.
Nathan spun around, his eyes darting between the detective and the bailiff. “What is this now? I haven't done anything else!”
“You have been served with a formal notice of suspension and administrative removal as CEO of Reed Culinary Holdings LLC,” Detective Vance stated clearly, handing the document directly into Nathan’s trembling hands. “By emergency resolution of the majority shareholder—Mrs. Elena Reed—you are stripped of all executive powers, company credit cards, office access, and vehicle privileges effective immediately.”
Nathan stared at the paper in absolute disbelief. “You can’t do that! I founded this company! My name is on the door!”
“Your name is on the door, Mr. Reed, but the corporate charter explicitly designates the primary stakeholder as the sole authority in cases of financial malfeasance and breach of fiduciary duty,” Vance replied smoothly. “Furthermore, you are required to surrender all company keys, electronic tokens, and the keys to your corporate-leased vehicle within the hour.”
Nathan looked back at me, his face twisted in a mixture of rage and utter helplessness. “Elena, you’re destroying everything we built! What are you going to do, run the restaurants by yourself? You don't know the first thing about managing the commercial side under this level of pressure!”
“I built the commercial side while you were busy playing golf and entertaining Brooke,” I said calmly. “And as of this morning, our head chef and general managers have already been briefed on your removal. They’re thrilled to finally have leadership that actually cares about the business rather than embezzlement.”
The reality of his situation finally seemed to sink into Nathan’s consciousness. Stripped of his money, his status, his mistress—who had already blocked his number the moment her name appeared in the corporate audit report—and now his company, he stood on the porch looking smaller than ever.
“Please, Elena,” Nathan whispered, his voice cracking as desperation clawed at his throat. “Just give me a second chance. Let’s sit down with lawyers and work out a settlement without destroying everything completely.”

“Your second chance was yesterday afternoon when you decided to spend Christmas Eve with Brooke instead of your daughter,” I said, turning the handle of the front door. “The only thing you’ll be discussing with my lawyer from now on is the division of your debts.”
I stepped inside the house and closed the heavy oak door right in his face, locking the deadbolt with a satisfying click. Through the frosted glass, I watched as Nathan slowly turned around and walked down the steps toward the street, defeated and utterly alone.
