Chapter 2 - The Unraveling at the Manor

The glowing Christmas lights on the estate’s facade cast warm, festive colors across the pristine snow, but inside the grand foyer of the Reed mansion, an icy tension was about to shatter the evening. On my phone screen, I watched the live feed from the security cameras I had personally installed. The two private investigators I had hired earlier that week—specialists in forensic corporate accounting and marital infidelity—stepped past the frosted glass double doors.

Nathan’s father, Arthur Reed, turned around with a glass of champagne in his hand, his expression shifting from jovial hospitality to sudden confusion as the investigators flashed their identification badges.

“Excuse me, this is a private family gathering,” Arthur said, his voice carrying clearly through the high-definition audio feed.

“Mr. Reed, I am Detective Vance, and this is my colleague, Ms. Hayes. We are here on a court-ordered asset preservation notice and to serve formal notice regarding corporate property occupancy,” Detective Vance stated smoothly, holding out a thick Manila folder.

Nathan pushed his way through the crowd of relatives and acquaintances, his face flushing crimson. Brooke stood a few paces behind him, her hands clasped nervously over the emerald-green silk dress she wore—a dress strikingly similar in price, though not in elegance, to the designer pieces I routinely purchased with my own earnings from managing our flagship restaurant, The Gilded Spoon.

“What is the meaning of this?” Nathan demanded, stepping directly into the path of the investigators. “Who sent you? This is harassment! Get out of my parents' house right now before I call the police.”

“Your parents' house, Mr. Reed?” Detective Hayes asked with a cool, professional smile. She flipped open a document and held it up under the warm glow of the chandelier. “According to the corporate deed registered with the state district court three years ago, this property does not belong to Arthur and Eleanor Reed. It is owned entirely by Reed Culinary Holdings LLC, with sole primary shareholding vested in Mrs. Elena Reed.”

The murmurs among the assembled family members grew instantly louder. Aunt Clara dropped a silver canapé fork onto the mahogany floor, the metallic clatter echoing sharply. Eleanor Reed gasped, her hand flying to her chest.

“That’s impossible!” Nathan shouted, his voice cracking slightly as panic pierced through his bravado. “Elena is just a silent partner in the administrative side. I built this empire!”

“You built nothing without my capital and my father’s legacy backing it, Nathan,” I whispered softly to myself, watching the screen from my living room miles away while Lily played quietly with her building blocks, completely unaware of the earthquake unfolding in her grandfather's living room.

On the screen, Detective Vance continued, unbothered by Nathan’s outburst. “Furthermore, Mr. Reed, we have a federal and civil injunction filed tonight regarding the systematic embezzlement of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars from corporate accounts into unauthorized private holdings. Any attempt to liquidate assets, transfer funds, or utilize corporate-backed collateral starting from this minute constitutes felony fraud.”

Brooke’s face drained of color. She took a step backward, bumping against a decorative pine wreath hanging on the wall. “Nathan... what are they talking about? You said your business was completely secure!”

Nathan stared at the legal papers in horror, realizing too late that the woman he had dismissed as a quiet, domestic wife had been several steps ahead of him the entire time.
