Chapter 4 - The Strategic Counter-Offensive

The morning sun cast a bright, crisp glare across the snow-covered lawn outside my home. Christmas morning had arrived, bringing with it a sense of profound peace rather than the manufactured anxiety of previous years. Lily woke up early, running into my room with infectious excitement to check the stockings we had hung by our bedroom fireplace.

As Lily tore open the wrapping paper on her new art set, my phone buzzed repeatedly on the bedside table. I picked it up to find a torrent of missed calls and text messages from Nathan.

“Elena, please, you’ve gone too far this time.” “The police are involved because of your stunt, the bank cards are declined, and Brooke is threatening to sue me for ruining her reputation!” “Let’s talk like adults. Come back to the house. We can fix this.”

I didn’t reply to a single message. Instead, I forwarded the entire thread to Sarah Mitchell to be added to the growing dossier for our fast-tracked divorce and asset forfeiture proceedings.

At ten o’clock, a sharp knock sounded at our front door.

I opened it to find Nathan standing on the porch. He looked thoroughly disheveled, his designer winter coat unzipped, his hair unstyled, and dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. The grand, arrogant facade he usually wore had completely collapsed.

“Elena,” he breathed out, stepping forward as if to embrace me.

I held up a single hand, blocking his path, and stepped outside onto the porch, pulling the door closed behind me so Lily wouldn't hear.

“Don’t even think about it, Nathan,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

“What is wrong with you?” he hissed, his temper finally flaring through his desperation. “You ruined Christmas Eve in front of my entire family! The police came, the investigators humiliated us, and now my accounts are frozen! I couldn’t even buy breakfast this morning!”

“That’s fascinating,” I replied evenly. “Because according to the forensic audit completed last night, you’ve managed to siphon nearly half a million dollars of corporate revenue into a secret offshore account registered under Brooke Lawson’s maiden name. That’s not just grounds for a messy divorce, Nathan. That’s grand larceny.”

Nathan’s jaw went slack. He stared at me as if he were seeing a ghost. “You... you knew about the account?”

“I audit the payroll, Nathan. Did you really think you could hide thousands of dollars in fictitious 'expansion expenses' from the person who balances the ledger every single week?” I crossed my arms, looking down at him with quiet pity. “You thought I was just a housewife who stayed at home and took care of our daughter while you played king of the business world. You made a very expensive mistake.”

“Elena, listen to me,” he stammered, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading tone as he tried to grab my wrists. “It was a mistake! Brooke meant nothing to me! It was just a stupid workplace distraction! Please, think of Lily! We can’t break up our family over this!”

I yanked my hands away from his grip, stepping back.

“You broke this family the moment you told us not to come to your parents' house because your mistress took our place,” I said, my voice cold and steady. “And as for Lily, she is much better off knowing her mother has self-respect than growing up watching me tolerate a coward.”

Before Nathan could speak another word, a black sedan pulled into our driveway. Two men in sharp charcoal suits stepped out. It was Detective Vance and a court bailiff bearing formal eviction and restraining orders.
