Chapter 4 - The Legal Storm

The following months were a hurricane of legal proceedings, depositions, and psychological therapy sessions.

I enrolled Khloe in child trauma counseling with a specialist named Dr. Aris. Dr. Aris was a gentle, patient woman who used play therapy and art to help Khloe process the fear and guilt Derek had instilled in her.

"Children who are threatened by adults often carry a heavy burden of false responsibility," Dr. Aris explained to me during one of our parent check-ins. "Derek told her that if she spoke up, you would be hurt. By coming forward, she feels like she put you in danger. Our work is to reframe her choice as an act of absolute bravery that saved everyone."

Meanwhile, the federal case against Derek Vance gained monstrous momentum. The FBI's Cyber Crimes Division joined forces with local prosecution after forensically unlocking a secondary cloud drive belonging to Vance. What they uncovered was a dark, systemic web stretching across four states.

Because of the sheer volume of evidence recovered from his devices, the Assistant District Attorney, prosecutor Karen Vance (no relation), called me in for a trial prep meeting.

"Lauren, I want to be transparent with you," Prosecutor Vance said, setting a legal pad on her desk. "Derek's defense team attempted to file a motion to suppress the digital evidence, claiming the initial search warrant lacked probable cause because it relied heavily on the word of a six-year-old child."

My heart sank. "Can they get the evidence thrown out?"

"Not a chance," she smiled grimly. "The judge flatly rejected the motion. Your immediate call to 911 from the driveway created a clear, unbroken timeline. Furthermore, your physical reporting of the threat matched behavioral patterns documented by child protective specialists. The warrant stands. In fact, faced with mandatory minimum sentences of forty years to life, his attorney is desperately trying to negotiate a plea deal."

"What kind of plea deal?" I asked.

"They want him to plead guilty to lesser charges to avoid a public trial," she explained. "But we are refusing any deal that doesn't carry a minimum of thirty years without the possibility of parole. However, to secure that, Khloe may need to give a closed-circuit video deposition."

The thought of my little girl having to recount that terrible afternoon made my stomach turn. But when I discussed it softly with Khloe and Dr. Aris a few days later, Khloe looked up at me with surprisingly clear eyes.

"Mommy," Khloe said, holding her favorite stuffed rabbit close to her chest. "If I talk to the nice judge on the TV screen, will it make sure he never comes back?"

"Yes, baby," I said, tears welling in my eyes. "It will make sure of that."

"Then I want to do it," she said firmly. "So he can't scare any other little girls."

While Khloe showed incredible courage, my family was collapsing under the weight of their own denial.

Veronica had spent thousands of dollars from her savings account to help hire a defense attorney for Derek during the initial weeks, firmly convinced he was an innocent victim of a police conspiracy. But as the federal indictments were formally unsealed and the terrifying details of Derek's hidden life were made public in local news releases, the truth became impossible to ignore.
