Chapter 3 - The Fractured Family

I sat in my car, staring at the screen of my phone. The notifications kept cascading in like a relentless avalanche.

Veronica: You ruined my life! Derek was arrested at work in handcuffs! What did you tell the police, you crazy bitch?!

Mother: Call me right now. Your father is having chest pains. How could you do this to your sister over a misunderstanding?

Father: You bring shame on this family. Undo whatever lie you told the cops or don't bother coming back.

My fingers trembled as I read their words. Not a single text asked about Khloe. Not one message asked if their six-year-old granddaughter was okay, or what she had experienced in that bathroom while they were drinking beer and eating burgers on the patio.

I drove straight to my apartment, where my closest friend, Sarah, was waiting with Khloe. Sarah had stayed with her while I went to the police station. As soon as I walked through the door, Khloe ran to me, wrapping her arms tightly around my waist.

"Mommy," she whispered, her voice muffled against my shirt. "Is the bad man gone?"

I dropped to my knees, hugging her tight, inhaling the sweet smell of her baby shampoo. "Yes, sweetie. The bad man is far away, and he can never, ever hurt us again. The police took him, and you were so, so brave."

That evening, as Khloe slept soundly in her bed under the watch of a new nightlight we had picked out together, the doorbell rang loudly.

I checked the security camera on my phone. Standing on my front porch were my father, my mother, and Veronica. Veronica’s eyes were swollen from crying, but her posture was rigid with fury. My father looked red-faced and agitated.

I unlocked the deadbolt but opened the door only a few inches, keeping the security chain engaged.

"Open the door, Lauren," my father commanded, his voice carrying the same booming tone he used at the barbecue. "We need to talk about this mess you've made."

"You need to leave," I said coldly, my voice steady and devoid of the fear I used to feel around them.

"Leave?!" Veronica shrieked, pressing her face against the gap in the door. "Derek was hauled out of his office by federal agents! He's sitting in a jail cell because you raised a false alarm over Khloe being sensitive! Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is for me?!"

"A false alarm?" I stared at my sister, feeling a profound sense of pity mixed with absolute disgust. "Veronica, he threatened to hurt me so Khloe wouldn't tell what he did in the bathroom. He had encrypted files on his computer containing thousands of pictures of children."

"That's a setup!" Veronica yelled. "He told me he had an ex-wife who tried to frame him! You just wanted to ruin my relationship because you've been single and bitter ever since your divorce!"

My mother stepped forward, her hands folded over her chest. "Lauren, please. Think about the family. If this goes to trial, the neighbors will talk. The entire town will know. We can tell the police that Khloe was confused, that she misspoke, and we can handle this internally—"

"Handle it internally?" I interrupted, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You slapped me, Veronica. Mom, you told me to stop making things up. Dad, you pointed at me and told me to take my 'lying kid' and get out. You chose a man you knew for three months over your own daughter and granddaughter."

"We were protecting the peace of this family!" my father shouted.

"No," I said, staring him dead in the eye. "You were protecting your own comfort. You didn't want your sunny afternoon ruined by a uncomfortable truth. Well, the truth is here now. And if any of you ever set foot on my property again, I will have the police arrest you for trespassing and harassment."

Before my father could speak, I slammed the door shut and engaged all three locks.
