Chapter 2 - Unveiling the Dark Digital Shadow

Detective Miller slid a series of printouts across the cold wooden table. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed a low, clinical tone, contrasting sharply with the chaotic nightmare spinning in my mind.

"What you're looking at," Detective Miller said gently, "are forensic logs from Derek Vance’s primary phone and secondary encrypted hard drive."

I stared down at the paper. Terms like peer-to-peer networks, encrypted messaging protocols, and cloud repositories jumped out at me. Below them were dozens of timestamps, geolocations, and thumbnail previews that had been blacked out by the police department to protect my sanity.

"When you called us from your car two days ago," Detective Miller explained, "our preliminary interviews with Khloe gave us enough reasonable suspicion to seek an emergency warrant. Given the nature of her disclosures and the threat he made against you, a judge authorized a search of his person, vehicle, and digital assets immediately while he was still at your father's house."

I pressed my hand against my chest, feeling my pulse hammering against my ribs. "He did this before, didn't he?"

Detective Miller leaned back, his expression somber. "Derek Vance isn't just a predator who got caught in the act at a family barbecue, Mrs. Hayes. He is a high-level moderator on an international illicit image sharing network. For the past three years, he has been using a fake identity as an independent digital marketing consultant to travel between towns, target vulnerable families, and gain access to children."

The room seemed to tilt. A cold nausea swept over me. "Veronica..." I choked out. "My sister... how long did he plan this?"

"He met your sister through a local event three months ago," Miller said. "According to chat logs recovered from his secondary device, he specifically sought out women with young children or relatives with young children. He targeted Veronica because she was eager to please him and isolate him from anyone who might raise suspicions. He referred to your father's home in private messages as an 'ideal environment' because of the existing family friction."

Tears spilled over my eyelashes. "My parents called her a liar. My father threw us out."

"I know," Miller said softly. "And that ignorance was precisely what Vance was banking on. Predators rely on social discomfort, family denial, and the fear of 'making a scene.' But your decision to drive away, to ignore their pressure, and to call us right from the driveway gave us the exact window we needed before he could wipe his devices remotely."

The detective pulled out a second document—an official arrest warrant.

"Derek Vance was taken into custody two hours ago at his workplace," Miller stated. "He is being charged with felony child endangerment, criminal intimidation, and multiple federal counts related to the possession, distribution, and manufacturing of illegal materials involving minors. Because of Khloe's brave statement, state and federal authorities are currently raiding three secondary locations tied to his network."

"Is he... can he get out on bail?" I whispered, terror gripping my stomach.

"Not a chance," Miller replied firmly. "Given the federal scope of the charges, the flight risk, and the explicit physical threat he made to you and your daughter, the judge ordered him held without bond pending trial."

As I stepped out of the police station into the late afternoon sunlight, my phone vibrated in my purse. I pulled it out and saw twenty-seven missed calls and dozens of text messages.

They were all from my mother, my father, and Veronica.
