Chapter 9 - Rebuilding a Life

As the months passed, the dark clouds that had shadowed Ruby’s early childhood began to clear, replaced by the normal, vibrant energy of a growing child.

The criminal justice system moved steadily forward. Six months after the night of her arrest, Paula entered a guilty plea to reduced charges of felony child neglect and was sentenced to eight years in state prison. Sergio, facing overwhelming physical evidence and multiple counts of aggravated child abuse and unlawful imprisonment, was convicted at trial and sentenced to twenty-five years without the possibility of parole.

With the criminal trials behind us, the family court officially terminated Paula's parental rights, allowing me to file for formal, permanent adoption.

In the spring, Ruby celebrated her sixth birthday.

Our house was transformed into a sea of pink decorations, balloons, and paper banners. Ms. Vance came, bringing a large set of professional art supplies to replace the cheap coloring book that had once saved Ruby's life. Sarah Jenkins, the caseworker who had fought for us from day one, stopped by with a giant teddy bear.

Ruby stood at the kitchen table in a bright yellow sundress. Her cheeks were full and rosy, her body healthy and strong, her eyes sparkling with genuine joy.

Before her sat a massive, three-tiered chocolate birthday cake covered in sprinkles and six bright, flickering candles.

The entire room sang "Happy Birthday" at the top of their lungs. When the song ended, everyone clapped, waiting for her to blow out the candles.

Ruby looked at the cake, then looked around the room filled with people who loved her, defended her, and cared for her without conditions. Finally, her eyes met mine.

There was no fear in her gaze anymore. No hesitation. No silent plea for permission.

"Make a wish, Ruby!" Ms. Vance cheered softly.

Ruby leaned over the table, took a deep, full breath, and blew out every single candle in a single burst of air.

The room erupted into cheers. I cut a giant slice of chocolate cake and set it down in front of her.

She picked up her fork, took a huge bite of frosting, and grinned, chocolate smudged across her cheek. "This is the best day ever!"
