Chapter 6 - The Airport Intercept

The next morning, the city was blanketed in a heavy gray mist. True to his word, Detective Vance—a tall, broad-shouldered man with kind eyes and a quiet demeanor—arrived at my apartment building right at eight o’clock.

Lily held my hand tightly as we walked down to the unmarked car. She looked up at Detective Vance in his plainclothes jacket and whispered, “Are we going on an adventure?”

“We’re going to meet some people who care about you very much, Lily,” Detective Vance replied with a gentle smile that instantly put her at ease. “And nobody is ever going to hurt you again. I promise.”

We drove to the private aviation and executive terminal area of the city airport, bypassing the chaotic public traffic lanes entirely. Claire was already waiting inside a secure airport administration room alongside a female family services caseworker named Sarah.

The room was quiet, furnished with a couch and a small desk. Claire looked up as we walked in, her face focused and determined.

“Everything is in motion,” Claire said, checking her watch. “Melissa’s flight just landed. She’s taxiing to the gate right now.”

My heart hammered against my ribs. “And Mark?”

“Our units are currently monitoring his vehicle in the economy cell phone lot. He’s idling right where he said he’d be. The moment Melissa is secured with us, officers will approach his vehicle.”

Minutes ticked by like hours. Lily sat quietly on the sofa, coloring with a fresh pack of markers Sarah had thoughtfully provided, completely unaware of the dramatic legal operation unfolding around her.

Then, the door opened.

Detective Vance stepped aside, and Melissa walked into the room, hauling her rolling suitcase behind her. Her face lit up when she saw me, but it instantly shifted into confusion when she noticed Claire, the caseworker, and especially Lily sitting quietly on the couch.

“Daniel? What is going on?” Melissa asked, dropping her suitcase handle with a loud clatter. “Why isn’t Mark here? Why did these people meet me at the gate?”

“Sit down, Mel,” I said softly, stepping forward. “We need to talk.”

“What are you talking about? Where is my husband?” Melissa demanded, her voice rising with anxiety. “Mark said he was parking the car and coming inside to meet us—”

“Mark isn't coming in, Melissa,” Claire interrupted, her voice calm, authoritative, and utterly unyielding as she stepped forward with a thick manila folder. “And you need to look at these photographs before you ever speak to him again.”
