Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

That evening back at my apartment, the atmosphere felt charged with a quiet tension. I tried to keep things as normal as possible, playing board games with Lily and making a simple macaroni and cheese dinner—which she ate with considerably more confidence than the night before.

As the sun went down, Lily curled up on the living room rug with her stuffed rabbit, watching a cartoon. Her eyes grew heavy, and soon she drifted off to sleep.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text message from Melissa.

“Flight is confirmed for tomorrow at 11:15 AM. Mark is taking the morning off work to drive us both to the airport to pick me up together. Can’t wait to see my little girl. How has she been?”

My stomach twisted. Mark was planning to be at the airport. He was planning to intercept Melissa the second she walked out of the terminal gate, wrapping his manipulative control around her before she could even catch her breath.

I looked at Claire’s instructions and immediately dialed her encrypted number.

“She texted,” I told Claire as soon as she answered. “Melissa says Mark is driving to the airport tomorrow morning to pick her up.”

“Just as I suspected,” Claire replied instantly. “He wants to control the narrative before Melissa even steps foot outside the terminal. Here is our revised operational plan for tomorrow morning. You and Lily will not be at the airport terminal entrance. Instead, my investigator and two family court officers will intercept Melissa at her specific gate exit before she even reaches baggage claim. They will escort her to a private airport conference room where I will be waiting with the emergency protective paperwork.”

“And what about Mark?”

“Local police will be waiting at the short-term parking pickup zone where Mark’s vehicle will be idling. They will serve him with the ex parte protection order, barring him from approaching Melissa or Lily under any circumstances, pending a full evidentiary hearing.”

“And if he gets violent or aggressive?”

“He’ll be dealing with uniformed officers in a public transit hub. He won't try anything stupid,” Claire assured me. “Daniel, make sure Lily is dressed and ready by eight a.m. My colleague Detective Vance will pick you both up in an unmarked vehicle to ensure total security.”

“Understood. See you tomorrow morning.”

I hung up the phone and looked down at Lily sleeping peacefully on the rug. The storm was coming tomorrow, and when it broke, everything in our family would change forever. But looking at her peaceful, relaxed face—no longer bracing for a blow, no longer asking if she was allowed to eat—I knew we were fighting the right battle.
