Chapter 4 - The Attorney’s Office

Claire’s office was located in a quiet downtown building overlooking the city park. The walls were lined with heavy law books, and a corner of the room was set up with a small table, coloring books, and soft plush toys—clearly designed for children who found themselves caught in the machinery of family law.

When we walked in, Claire stood up from her desk. She looked sharp in a tailored navy blazer, her expression a mix of professional resolve and deep maternal concern.

“Daniel. And this must be Lily,” Claire said, stepping out from behind her desk and kneeling down to Lily’s level with a warm, disarming smile. “It’s so nice to meet you, Lily. I’m Claire. Your uncle tells me you’re an expert artist.”

Lily clutched her stuffed rabbit tighter, peeking out from behind my leg. “I like purple crayons,” she murmured.

“Purple is an excellent color,” Claire said, not pushing her too hard. She glanced up at me and nodded toward a small play area in the corner. “Why don't you go check out those markers and paper over there, Lily? Your uncle and I just need to talk business for a couple of minutes.”

Lily looked at me for approval. “Go ahead, buddy,” I said. “I’ll be right here.”

As Lily sat down at the small table and began coloring, Claire and I stepped over to her desk. She motioned for me to sit down and slid a folder across the mahogany wood.

“I reviewed the digital files and photos you sent last night,” Claire whispered, keeping her voice low. “The bruising pattern on her wrist is textbook defensive/restraint grip. Combined with the food deprivation statements, we have more than enough grounds for an emergency ex parte custody intervention and a protective order against Mark.”

“What about Melissa?” I asked, leaning forward. “How does she fit into all of this legally?”

“Legally, Melissa is the biological mother, but if she failed to protect the child or actively enabled the abuse, she could face neglect charges as well,” Claire explained grimly. “However, our primary leverage right now is getting Melissa away from Mark’s immediate influence. Tomorrow morning, when her conference ends and she lands at the airport, we won't let Mark pick her up. We’ll have a family services officer and local law enforcement meet her at baggage claim.”

“You’re going to ambush her at the airport?”

“It’s the only way to ensure she isn’t coached or threatened by Mark before she processes the reality of what’s happening at home,” Claire said firmly. “Once Melissa is separated from him in a neutral, safe environment, we present her with the evidence of what Mark has been doing to Lily behind her back. If she loves her daughter, she will file for an immediate restraining order and divorce. If she defends Mark... well, then we proceed with emergency kinship custody petition naming you as Lily’s primary guardian.”

I swallowed hard, looking across the room at Lily, who was carefully coloring a yellow sun. The weight of what was coming felt crushing, but there was no turning back.

“Let’s do it,” I said. “Protect Lily at all costs.”
