Chapter 7 - The Awakening

The first sign of Caleb’s return was a tiny, almost imperceptible twitch of his index finger.

I had been dozing in the vinyl chair beside his bed, my hand wrapped around his. The sudden movement startled me awake. I sat up, my heart pounding, my eyes fixed on his face.

"Caleb?" I whispered.

His eyelids fluttered. A soft, raspy groan escaped his throat. The monitors beside him shifted in rhythm, their beeps speeding up slightly as his brain began to shake off the chemical fog.

"Dr. Al-Jamil!" I called out into the hallway, my voice trembling with excitement. "He's waking up!"

The medical team entered the room quickly but calmly. Dr. Al-Jamil shone a small light into Caleb's eyes, checking his pupillary response.

"Caleb, can you hear me, buddy?" the doctor asked in a warm, encouraging voice. "Can you squeeze your mom's hand for me?"

For a second, nothing happened. My breath caught in my throat. Then, I felt it. A weak, gentle squeeze of his small fingers against mine.

"Good job, Caleb," Dr. Al-Jamil smiled. "Very good."

Slowly, Caleb’s eyes opened. They were glassy and unfocused at first, but as they swept across the room, they finally landed on me. The confusion in his expression cleared, replaced by a quiet recognition.

"Mommy?" his voice was barely a whisper, dry and scratchy.

"I'm here, baby. Mommy's here," I sobbed, leaning over the bed rail to press my cheek against his. I felt the warm, sweet breath of my son on my neck, and the last of the icy terror that had gripped my heart for the past twenty-four hours finally dissolved. "You're safe. You're at the hospital, but you're going to be okay."

"My tummy hurts," he muttered, his brow furrowing. "And I'm... I'm so tired."

"I know, sweetie. The doctors gave you some medicine to help you feel better. You can rest. Mommy isn't going anywhere."

"Auntie Amber... she gave me juice," Caleb whispered, his eyes drifting shut again. "It tasted bad. Like metal. I told her I didn't want it, but she said if I didn't drink it, she wouldn't let me play with Lily anymore."

My heart broke into a million pieces. The sheer cruelty of it—using his love for his cousin to force him to drink poison. I squeezed his hand tighter, my jaw clenching with a renewed sense of resolve.

"She won't ever hurt you again, Caleb. I promise you. Never again."

Dr. Al-Jamil checked his vitals one more time, his expression relieved. "His neurological functions are fully intact, Sarah. The seizure didn't cause any permanent damage. We'll keep him on IV fluids and monitor his liver enzymes for another day or two, but he’s going to make a full recovery."

"Thank you," I wept, hugging the doctor. "Thank you so much."

With Caleb awake and safe, the final phase of the battle began. I called Detective Miller to let him know Caleb was conscious and had confirmed Amber’s actions.

"That's the final nail in the coffin, Sarah," Miller said over the line. "The District Attorney is upgrading the charges to attempted premeditated murder. The grand jury is convening tomorrow. Amber Carter is not getting out on bail. She is going to trial, and with the evidence we have, she’s going away for a very long time."

I hung up the phone and looked out the hospital window. The sun was beginning to rise, casting a warm, golden glow over the city. The darkness of the night was finally fading, replaced by the promise of a new day.
