Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

While Amber was being processed into a holding cell, the investigation expanded rapidly. Within hours, Marcus Vance, the corrupt physician's assistant, was arrested at his home. Fearing a lengthy prison sentence, he immediately agreed to cooperate with the prosecution, detailing exactly how Amber had approached him with the plan.
I returned to the hospital, exhausted but carrying a lighter heart. The threat to my family was being dismantled piece by piece.
I sat by Caleb’s bed, holding his small, warm hand. The doctor had reduced his sedation, and they expected him to wake up within the next twelve hours.
"He's going to be okay, Sarah," a gentle voice said from the doorway.
I turned to see my aunt, Evelyn. She had flown in from Chicago as soon as she heard the news. Evelyn was my mother’s sister, a wise, warm-hearted woman who had always been a stabilizing force in our family.
"Aunt Evelyn," I breathed, rising to hug her. I buried my face in her shoulder, letting the tears fall freely for the first time since this nightmare began.
"I'm here, sweetheart. I've got you," she whispered, stroking my hair. She looked at Caleb, her eyes softening. "He's a fighter, just like his mother."
As we sat together, Evelyn began to speak about the family history, shedding light on the dark roots of Amber’s obsession.
"You have to understand, Sarah, Amber's envy didn't start with the trust fund," Evelyn said, sipping a cup of terrible hospital coffee. "It started years ago, when she first married David. She grew up in a household where wealth was the only measure of worth, but her family lost everything when she was a teenager. She married David thinking he would be her ticket back to that high-society life. But David is... well, he’s a good man, but he’s not a businessman. When his investments failed, Amber's resentment began to fester."
"But why target Caleb?" I asked, looking at my sleeping son. "He's just a child."
"Because Caleb represented everything she couldn't have," Evelyn explained. "Your father saw through Amber. He knew she was manipulative. That’s why he left the trust fund strictly to Caleb, with you as the sole administrator. He knew that if he left anything to David, Amber would spend it within a year. She knew this. She felt insulted, bypassed. In her twisted mind, she convinced herself that you had manipulated your father into writing David out of the main inheritance."
The depth of her delusion was staggering. My father had loved David, but he had also known his limitations. The trust was designed to protect Caleb, to ensure that no matter what happened to our volatile family, his future was secure. Amber had taken that act of protection as a personal declaration of war.
The door to the room opened, and David walked in. He looked smaller now, stripped of the bravado he usually tried to project. He looked at Aunt Evelyn, then at me, his eyes full of shame.
"Sarah... can I speak to you?" he asked quietly.
Evelyn gave my hand a reassuring squeeze and stood up. "I'll go get us some real food," she said, giving David a stern but not unkind look as she left the room.
David sat in the chair she had vacated. He kept his distance, his hands clasped tightly between his knees. "The police finished taking my statement. I told them everything, Sarah. Every single detail. I gave them access to our joint bank accounts, our emails, everything. I want them to have a airtight case against her."
"Thank you, David," I said, my voice soft. "But you need to understand... things can never go back to how they were. What she did... it almost killed him."
"I know," David said, a tear slipping down his cheek. "And I will never forgive myself for not seeing how deep her madness went. I was so caught up in my own financial stress, so ashamed of my failures, that I let her poison my mind too. I let her make me believe that you were the enemy."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper, handing it to me.
"What is this?" I asked, unfolding it.
"It's my relinquishment of any potential custody rights to Caleb, and a formal request for a restraining order against Amber on behalf of Lily and myself," David said. "I’m going to apply for full custody of Lily. I want to take her away from here, Sarah. Start over somewhere clean. But I want her to know her cousin. I want her to know you. If you'll let us."

I looked at the document, then at my brother. The anger I had felt toward him began to melt away, replaced by a profound pity. He had been a victim of Amber’s manipulation too, though his weakness had made him an enabler.
"Let's focus on getting Caleb awake first, David," I said gently. "Then, we'll talk about the future."
