Chapter 4 - The Search and the Trap

The drive to my suburban home was tense. The police cruiser led the way, its lights flashing silently against the dark evening sky. I rode with Detective Miller, while David sat in the back of a separate police car.
"We need to play this carefully, Sarah," Miller said, his eyes on the road. "If Amber has accomplices, or if she has already tipped off her lawyer about the planted drugs, they will be watching your house. We're going in under the guise of retrieving overnight clothes for you and Caleb. If we find the drugs, we don't touch them with bare hands. We let the forensics team do their work."
When we arrived at my neat, two-story house, the street was quiet. Nothing seemed out of place. But as I unlocked the front door, a subtle scent of expensive, sweet perfume hit my nose.
Amber's perfume. Midnight Jasmine.
My stomach churned. "She was here," I whispered, pointing to the hallway. "She doesn't wear this often, but she wore it today at the park. The scent is still lingering."
"Officers, secure the perimeter," Miller ordered quietly. "Sarah, where would she likely hide something to make it look like a secret stash?"
"My bedroom," I said, my voice trembling. "Or maybe the kitchen pantry. But she’d want it somewhere convincing. Somewhere a 'negligent mother' would hide her pills."
We walked up the stairs, our footsteps muffled by the carpet. I led them to my master bedroom. The room was tidy, just as I had left it. But as I approached my nightstand, I noticed the drawer was slightly ajar. I always closed it completely.
Detective Miller stepped forward, wearing blue latex gloves. He carefully pulled the drawer open. Inside, tucked behind a stack of paperback novels, was a large, prescription-strength bottle of liquid sedative and several blister packs of pills.
"Jackpot," Miller muttered. "But look at this." He pointed to the label on the liquid bottle. It was partially torn off, but the remaining letters of the patient's name were visible: M-A-R-C-U-S.
"Marcus," I gasped. "The physician's assistant David mentioned. She got the drugs from him!"
"And she was sloppy," Miller said, a grim smile appearing on his face. "In her haste to frame you, she didn't clean up her sources properly. She probably thought you'd be too panicked to notice, or that the police would just take the drugs as evidence against you without looking too closely at the origin."
Suddenly, my phone rang. The screen displayed a restricted number. Miller nodded at me to answer it, tapping a button on his own device to record the call.
"Hello?" I said, keeping my voice shaky and terrified.
"Sarah," a voice hissed. It was Amber. She sounded frantic, the mask of cool condescension completely gone. "Did you get my message? Have you talked to the police yet? You need to tell them it was an accident. You need to tell them you bought those drugs online for your own stress and that I just found them."
"Amber, Caleb almost died!" I cried out, the anger in my voice entirely real. "He had a seizure! How could you do this? Why are you trying to ruin me?"
"Because you have everything!" she shrieked, her voice cracking with a terrifying intensity. "You have the perfect house, the perfect career, the money from your father! And what do I have? A husband who is a failure, a mountain of debt, and a life of mediocrity! That money was supposed to be shared, Sarah. Your father should have left it to both of us. If you're out of the picture, David gets custody of Caleb. We get the trust. We get to survive!"
"You poisoned a child for money," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper. "You poisoned Lily's cousin."
"Lily is a child, she'll forget!" Amber snapped. "But you... you won't. If you don't take the blame, I will make sure the police find that stash in your bedroom. I'll tell them you've been drugging him for months to keep him quiet so you could work. They'll believe me, Sarah. I’m the concerned sister-in-law. You're the cold, career-obsessed mother."
"I don't have to take the blame, Amber," I said, looking directly at Detective Miller, who was smiling grimly. "Because the police are standing right next to me. And we just found your stash. With Marcus's name on it."
There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line.
"You... you bitch," Amber whispered, her voice trembling with sudden, icy terror.

"We also have your fingerprint on the bottle, Amber," Miller called out loudly toward the phone. "And the security footage from the pharmacy is being processed as we speak. It's over, Amber. Hang up and stay where you are. We're coming for you."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
