Part 6: A Sister Comes Home

The DNA laboratory promised results within forty-eight hours.

They felt like the longest two days of Emily's life.

Nobody spoke much.

Lily sensed something important was happening.

"Mommy," she asked softly, "are we getting another grandma?"

Emily smiled through tears.

"No, sweetheart."

"Maybe..."

"...another aunt."

When Detective Hayes finally called...

Everyone drove to the police station together.

Emily's hands shook so badly Daniel had to park the car for her.

Inside a quiet interview room stood a woman with brown hair streaked with silver.

She looked nervous.

She looked tired.

But when she saw Linda...

She burst into tears.

"Mom?"

Linda cried out louder than anyone Emily had ever heard.

She ran across the room and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

Robert followed seconds later.

No one could speak.

They simply held each other.

After twenty-nine years...

Their family was together again.

Emily stood frozen.

The woman slowly turned toward her.

"I remember you."

Emily's voice disappeared.

"You...do?"

"You used to call me Soso because you couldn't pronounce Sophie."

Emily began crying before she realized it.

The sisters embraced so tightly that neither wanted to let go.

Years of grief...

Gone in a single moment.

Over the next several days Sophie told her story.

She had been kidnapped by the trafficking ring as a child.

Eventually she escaped as a teenager during a police operation.

Believing her family had given up hope—or perhaps died—she accepted a new identity arranged through a victim protection program.

Only recently had investigators connected old evidence with new DNA records.

The criminals who had once destroyed countless families had unknowingly left behind the proof that reunited one.

Daniel listened quietly before finally speaking.

"I owe your parents an apology."

Robert looked surprised.

Daniel continued.

"When I found that bag..."

"I thought they were monsters."

Robert shook his head.

"So did we."

"We thought you might be connected."

The room fell silent.

Then everyone laughed.

For the first time since that terrible anniversary...

The laughter didn't sound forced.

It sounded like healing.

As they left the station together, Lily reached up and grabbed Sophie's hand.

"Can I call you Aunt Sophie?"

May you like

Sophie smiled through happy tears.

"I've been waiting almost thirty years to hear someone call me family again."
