Part 4: The Trap

By sunrise, Emily's home no longer felt like a home.

It had become a command center.

Unmarked police cars sat quietly around the neighborhood.

Plainclothes detectives watched every entrance through hidden cameras.

Two officers stayed inside the house while another team monitored Lily's elementary school.

Detective Marcus Hayes spread photographs across the dining room table.

"The man in the courier uniform isn't working alone," he explained. "He wanted us to know he could reach your daughter whenever he wanted."

Emily squeezed Daniel's hand beneath the table.

"Then why didn't he just take her?"

Hayes looked toward the children's bedrooms.

"Because people like him enjoy control."

"They create fear."

"They make families panic."

"And panic creates mistakes."

Linda stared at the photographs of Lily.

"I should have come sooner."

Emily reached across the table and took her mother's hand.

"No."

"You came exactly when we needed you."

For the first time in years, mother and daughter embraced without anger between them.

Robert quietly looked away, wiping tears from his eyes.

Later that afternoon, the detectives proposed a dangerous plan.

"If this man believes you've discovered him," Hayes said, "he'll disappear."

"But if he believes everything has returned to normal..."

"...he'll try again."

Daniel immediately shook his head.

"No."

"I'm not using my daughter as bait."

Hayes nodded.

"You won't."

"We'll protect her every second."

"But we need him to think she's vulnerable."

Emily looked toward the backyard where Lily was drawing with sidewalk chalk while Noah chased bubbles.

She hated the idea.

But she hated the thought of that man escaping even more.

Finally she whispered...

"Do it."

The following Monday looked perfectly ordinary.

Daniel drove Lily to school.

Emily kissed Noah goodbye at preschool.

Linda and Robert returned home as if life had resumed.

Only nothing about the day was ordinary.

Every teacher knew.

Every security camera had been upgraded.

Officers posed as parents.

Others dressed as crossing guards.

One detective even pretended to repair telephone lines across the street.

At exactly 3:18 p.m., Lily walked out of school holding her teacher's hand.

Daniel waited beside the family SUV.

Then Detective Hayes spoke quietly into his radio.

"We have movement."

Across the street...

A white delivery van slowly rolled past the school.

Too slowly.

The driver never looked at traffic.

He only watched Lily.

The van continued another hundred feet before stopping beside a park.

A man stepped out wearing a maintenance uniform.

He carried a clipboard.

Then he smiled.

Exactly the same smile Daniel had seen through the peephole.

Hayes whispered...

"It's him."

The suspect didn't approach Lily.

Instead, he crouched beside a little boy playing alone.

He spoke kindly.

The boy smiled.

Within seconds the stranger had gained the child's trust.

Emily watched the live camera feed from police headquarters.

Her blood turned to ice.

"He's practicing," she whispered.

"No," Hayes answered.

"He's hunting."

The order came immediately.

"Don't arrest."

"Follow."

Six unmarked vehicles quietly pulled away.

The suspect never noticed.

For nearly two hours they tailed him through quiet neighborhoods before he entered an abandoned warehouse near the old railroad district.

When the detectives reviewed drone footage...

Their expressions changed completely.

There weren't two people inside.

There weren't five.

There were at least fifteen.

Children's bicycles stood outside.

Tiny shoes rested beside the entrance.

Someone whispered...

"My God..."

Hayes immediately called federal authorities.

"This isn't one kidnapper."

"It's an entire network."

Emily stared at the screen.

She realized one terrifying truth.

The nightmare that had stolen her sister decades ago...

...had never actually ended.
