Chapter 3 - Unmasking the Coward

By noon, the corporate office of Lone Star Logistics was buzzing. I walked through the glass doors of our headquarters wearing a crisp, bespoke cream blazer—a stark contrast to the ripped fabric left in my kitchen bin.
When I stepped into the executive wing, Carter was already in the lobby, pleading with security. He had arrived via rideshare, his suit rumpled, his hair unkempt.
“Maya, please! This is insane!” Carter rushed toward me, but my head of security, Marcus, stepped smoothly into his path. “We’re married! You can’t just fire me and lock me out!”
“I didn’t fire you yet, Carter,” I said, stopping in front of him. “You are on administrative leave pending an investigation into corporate misconduct and unauthorized financial transfers.”
Carter’s eyes blinked rapidly. A flash of genuine panic crossed his face—not the anger of an entitled husband, but the raw terror of a thief who knew he was about to be caught.
“What transfers?” he stammered. “I haven’t done anything!”
I brought up a tablet and turned it toward him. “Last night, after I sent the video of your mother destroying my clothes to our legal counsel, my accountants ran an initial sweep of your department’s discretionary fund. You approved $450,000 in ‘consulting fees’ over the past eighteen months to an LLC registered under the name Apex Strategy Group.”
I leaned in closer, keeping my voice low enough for only him to hear.

“Do you want to tell me who owns Apex Strategy Group, Carter? Or should I let the auditors reveal it to the police?”
Carter lost all color in his face. His mouth opened, but no sound came out. The cowardly silence that had defined his reaction in my kitchen was back—only this time, it couldn't shield him.
