Chapter 6 - The Unmasking at the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in golden light. The city’s elite—billionaires, politicians, and CEOs—chatted over champagne.
Dominic and Victoria arrived, looking out of place despite their best efforts. Dominic’s tuxedo was a year old, and Victoria’s diamonds felt heavy and desperate. They stood near the entrance, anxiously scanning the crowd for the mysterious Chairperson of Vanguard Holdings.
"Where are they?" Victoria muttered, sipping her champagne disdainfully. "We should have been escorted to the VIP lounge."

Dominic froze. The glass in his hand slipped, shattering on the floor for the second time in two weeks.
Victoria gasped, her eyes wide with absolute horror.

I walked right past him, greeting the Mayor and several prominent bank owners who eagerly shook my hand. Dominic watched in sheer disbelief as the most powerful people in the city treated his "charity-case" wife with absolute reverence.

Finally, after letting them stew in their shock for an hour, I turned to them. Sophia and Alex stood flanking me like guards.
"Dominic. Victoria," I said, my voice smooth and icy. "I see you received my invitation."
