Chapter 7 - The Downfall of an Empress

The color drained from Eleanor Vance’s face so fast it looked as though she had been struck by lightning. Her pristine, perfectly curated facade shattered into a million jagged pieces right before our eyes.
“Turn that off!” Eleanor shrieked, losing her legendary composure for the very first time in public. She lunged forward, her diamond bracelets clinking frantically as she pointed a shaking finger at the stage. “It’s a deepfake! It’s slander! Cut the power immediately!”
But it was far too late.
Flashbulbs immediately began to blind her from the sides of the room as journalists and reporters—tipped off by David hours earlier—swarmed the perimeter of the ballroom, recording every second of her hysterical outburst.
Within seconds, the audio continued playing, broadcasting her chilling admission of attempting to substitute infant formula with industrial toxins to eliminate a perceived ‘weakness’ in the family lineage.
“My god,” one of the primary European investors whispered aloud, dropping his glass of Champagne. It shattered on the marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the stunned whispers of the crowd. “She’s completely psychotic.”
“The merger is terminated!” the lead European representative announced loudly, standing up and slamming his folder shut on the table. “Vance Global is toxic. We are withdrawing all funds immediately!”
As the corporate titans scrambled toward the exits to distance themselves from the sinking ship, heavy glass doors at the main entrance swung open.
Three federal marshals, accompanied by local New York City police detectives, walked purposefully into the ballroom. They bypassed the fleeing investors, walked straight down the center aisle, and stopped directly in front of Eleanor Vance.
“Eleanor Vance?” the lead detective asked, his voice calm and authoritative, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket. “You are under arrest for attempted homicide, possession and distribution of hazardous industrial toxins, and child endangerment.”
Eleanor stood frozen, her chest heaving as she stared at the handcuffs in the detective's hands. She looked around the room, expecting her allies, her board members, or her lawyers to step forward and save her.
Instead, every single person turned their eyes away. She was entirely, utterly alone.
“This is an outrage!” Eleanor managed to spit out, her voice trembling with venomous rage as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. “You don't know who you’re dealing with! My son—Mark will never let this happen!”
Mark and I stepped out from the shadows of the back row, walking slowly down the center aisle toward the stage until we stood directly under the harsh glare of the spotlights, right in front of her.
Mark looked down at his mother, his expression entirely devoid of fear, hesitation, or regret.
“Mark...” Eleanor breathed, her voice softening into a desperate, pathetic plea for the first time in her life. “Mark, please. You’re my son. Tell them it’s a lie. Tell them we’re a family.”
Mark looked her dead in the eye, his voice steady, cold, and final.

“I haven't been your son in a long time, Eleanor. I was just a pawn in your game. And the game is over.”
Without another word, the federal officers turned her around and escorted her out of the ballroom in handcuffs, her expensive emerald silk dress trailing across the floor as she was led away to face a lifetime behind bars.
