Chapter 6 - The Setup at the Gala

Forty-eight hours later, the glittering glass facade of the Manhattan skyline pierced the evening fog. Inside the grand ballroom of the Hudson Hotel, the Vance Global international merger gala was underway in all its opulent, Champagne-flowing glory.

Hundreds of elite investors, corporate executives, politicians, and socialites mingled beneath crystal chandeliers, celebrating what was supposed to be the crowning achievement of Eleanor Vance’s ruthless career.

Eleanor stood near the front stage, draped in custom emerald silk and glittering diamond jewelry, accepting congratulatory handshakes with her signature cold, superior smile. She looked invincible.

She had no idea what was waiting for her just outside those doors.

Mark and I stood near the back of the massive ballroom, dressed in sharp formal attire. Leo was safely asleep with my mother, who had driven down from Vermont to stay with him in a secure, undisclosed hotel suite just to be safe.

“Are you ready?” Mark whispered, squeezing my hand tightly. My palms were sweating, but my resolve was absolute.

“I’ve never been more ready in my life,” I replied, looking toward the center stage where a giant LED screen displayed the Vance Global corporate logo.

Right at 8:00 PM, the lights in the ballroom dimmed slightly, and a man stepped up to the podium to announce the official signing ceremony. It was David.

The entire room went quiet, expecting a standard introductory speech from a board member. Instead, David stood tall behind the microphone, looking directly toward the VIP table where Eleanor sat with her chief legal counsel.

“Before we proceed with tonight’s merger agreements,” David’s voice boomed through the high-end sound system, echoing crystal clear across the hall, “there is an urgent matter of corporate governance, ethics, and criminal liability that every investor in this room needs to hear.”

A murmur of confusion rippled through the crowd. Eleanor’s face hardened instantly. She stood up from her seat, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as she stared at her nephew on the stage.

“Security,” Eleanor hissed sharply, gesturing to the guards stationed by the doors. “Remove him immediately. He’s trespassing and intoxicated.”

Before the security guards could take a single step forward, David pressed a button on his remote.

The giant LED screen behind him flickered. The corporate logo vanished. In its place, a high-resolution audio waveform appeared, accompanied by a bold, uneditable transcript.

And then, Eleanor Vance’s voice filled the massive ballroom, crystal clear and undeniable:

“That child carries the Vance name... If the child had a weak constitution and couldn't handle a rigorous metabolic adjustment, then nature would have simply taken its course. Natural selection, Mark. The strong survive...”

The entire ballroom plunged into a deafening, absolute silence.

For three seconds, nobody moved, nobody breathed. Then, hundreds of heads snapped in unison toward Eleanor Vance.
