Chapter 5 - The Digital Net

As soon as the click of the front door echoed through the foyer, Mark sprinted toward the study. I followed closely behind, carrying Leo, who was now quietly dozing off against my shoulder.

In the center of the study desk lay Mark’s laptop, connected to an encrypted audio feed and a high-definition recording device we had hidden inside the floral arrangement on the coffee table.

Mark dropped into the leather chair and eagerly hit stop on the recording software. A visual waveform filled the screen, displaying every crisp, clear syllable of Eleanor Vance’s chilling monologue.

“Did it capture it?” I asked, holding my breath.

Mark leaned back, a fierce, triumphant grin breaking across his face as he hit play. Eleanor’s cold, arrogant voice filled the room, echoing every sociopathic confession she had just made about natural selection, the poison, and her threats of using her legal team to steal our son.

“Crystal clear,” Mark whispered, his eyes shining with tears of relief and vindication. “Every single word. Her admission of intent, her dismissal of the child's life, her threats—it’s all right here.”

“Is it enough for the police?” I asked anxiously.

“It’s more than enough for the police,” Mark said, already typing furiously on his keyboard. “But if we just hand this over to local Westport police, her corporate lawyers might try to tamper with jurisdiction or stall the investigation using federal loopholes. We need to go higher. We need to go public and federal simultaneously.”

“What do you mean?”

“My mother’s empire, Vance Global, is currently in the middle of a massive multi-billion-dollar international merger with a European conglomerate,” Mark explained, his fingers flying across the keys. “The deal is scheduled to be finalized in less than forty-eight hours at an executive gala in Manhattan. If this audio drops right before the merger, her board of directors will implode, federal regulators will launch an immediate criminal probe, and she won't have the legal shield she’s relying on.”

I felt a shiver run down my spine, but this time, it wasn't out of fear. It was the thrill of righteous justice.

“Do you know who can help us make sure this hits the right desks instantly?” Mark asked, looking up at me.

“Who?”

“My cousin, David.”

I blinked in surprise. David was Eleanor’s younger brother’s son—Mark’s cousin. He had been effectively disowned and exiled by the family years ago after blowing the whistle on shady financial practices within Vance Global’s shipping division. He now worked as a senior investigative journalist for a major national news network, specializing in corporate corruption.

“Can we trust him?” I asked.

“With our lives,” Mark said firmly. “He’s been waiting ten years for a chance to bring Eleanor down.”

Mark picked up his phone, dialed a secure, encrypted messaging number, and sent the audio file along with a single text message:

“Hi David. It’s Mark. I have something that will end Eleanor Vance forever. Are you ready to work together?”

Within thirty seconds, the phone rang. Mark answered immediately and put it on speaker.

“Mark?” David’s voice came through, sounding tense and incredulous. “Is this a joke? If this is one of Eleanor’s traps—”

“It’s no trap, David,” Mark interrupted, his voice steady and resolute. “She tried to poison my five-month-old son with industrial chemicals disguised as baby formula. And I have her full confession recorded on tape.”

There was a dead silence on the other end of the line for a long, heavy moment. Then, David let out a low, breathy whistle.

“Send me the file right now,” David said, his voice dropping into professional overdrive. “If what you’re saying is true, we don't just have a news story. We have a federal indictment.”
