Chapter 8 - Welcome Home

On a crisp autumn morning six weeks after that terrifying afternoon, Katherine was officially discharged from the hospital along with baby Samuel and baby Clara.
Detective Miller drove the family back to their rural property in his patrol vehicle, with Eleanor riding in the passenger seat. Lily sat in the back next to her mother, holding her mother's hand while gazing out the window at the familiar dirt road.
When the car turned onto the driveway, Katherine gasped, covering her mouth with her hands.
The crumbling, isolated cottage had been completely transformed. The exterior had been freshly painted in warm cream with white trim. A sturdy new roof sparkled in the morning sunlight, and smoke rose gently from the chimney. Standing along the driveway were dozens of neighbors, volunteers, hospital staff, and local officers who had helped turn the tragedy into a triumph.
As Katherine stepped out of the vehicle holding Samuel, and Eleanor helped Lily out with Clara in her carrier, the crowd broke into warm applause.
Marcus Vance stepped forward, handing Katherine a polished set of keys. "Welcome home, Katherine. Your house is warm, your water is running, and your pantry is fully stocked for the year. You and your children will never have to face hardship alone again."

Katherine tried to speak, but tears of gratitude choked her voice. She simply embraced Marcus, then turned to look at the front porch.
There, sitting beside the newly built wooden steps, was the restored sky-blue wheelbarrow, filled with vibrant blooming autumn marigolds and green ferns. A small bronze plaque had been affixed to its side, reading: “To Lily: Whose courageous steps brought light into the darkest night.”
