Chapter 7 - The Road to Healing

Over the next three weeks, Katherine’s physical strength gradually returned. Under the care of hospital therapists and nutritionists, her anemia was treated, her body recovered from the trauma of the birth, and her strength was restored.

Lily’s blistered hands and bruised feet healed completely under proper medical care. The trauma of her agonizing journey began to fade, replaced by the joy of watching her baby brother, named Samuel, and baby sister, named Clara, grow stronger every day.

During her time in the pediatric ward, Lily was introduced to a child counselor, Dr. Aris, who helped her process the deep fear she had experienced during those three terrifying days alone at home.

"Are you still worried about your mommy sleeping?" Dr. Aris asked during one of their quiet drawing sessions.

Lily picked up a green crayon, carefully drawing a sturdy wooden house surrounded by flowers. "Not anymore," Lily said softly. "Because now there are doctors, and nurses, and Mr. Mark the police officer. If Mommy sleeps, I don't have to push the wheelbarrow alone anymore. People are listening now."

The statement was profound in its simplicity. The burden of adult survival that had been thrust onto seven-year-old shoulders was finally lifted, allowing Lily to simply be a child again.

Meanwhile, back at the farmhouse, the volunteer renovation project was completed. The rusty, squeaky wheelbarrow that Lily had pushed to the hospital doors was removed from the hospital grounds by Marcus's crew. But instead of throwing it away, they carefully restored it—sanding down the rust, painting it a soft sky-blue, and lining the inside with smooth cedar wood to serve as a planter box for the family's front porch.

It was no longer a tool of desperate survival; it was transformed into an enduring symbol of resilience, love, and hope.
