Chapter 5 - The Reunion

On the afternoon of the third day, the medical team cleared Katherine for a brief visit from her eldest child. Lily was led into the room by Eleanor, holding a drawn picture of three small hearts surrounded by bright yellow suns.

The moment the door opened and Lily saw her mother sitting up in bed, supported by pillows, the little girl froze. For a second, the fear of the past three days seemed to hover over her.

"Lily," Katherine whispered, extending her weak, bandaged arms.

Lily ran across the room, carefully throwing her arms around her mother's waist, avoiding the IV lines attached to Katherine's arms. Katherine pulled her child close, burying her face in Lily's hair, sobbing quietly.

"I'm sorry, baby," Katherine wept. "I'm so sorry I couldn't wake up. I was so scared I left you alone."

"I did what you told me, Mommy," Lily said, looking up with bright, clear eyes. "I remembered the blue mailbox. I remembered to push the wheelbarrow straight down the paved road. I didn't stop."

"You saved us," Katherine said, kissing Lily's forehead, her hands gently wrapping around the child's bandaged fingers. "You saved your brother and sister. You saved me."

Dr. Harrison and Eleanor stood near the doorway, witnessing the quiet reunion. Eleanor wiped away a tear, turning to the physician.

"Child Protective Services was considering temporary foster placement while Katherine recovers," Eleanor whispered. "But seeing this... there is no broken home here. They just need help. They need a community."

Later that evening, the pediatric staff arranged for Katherine to be wheeled into the NICU. Sitting in a wheelchair, she held her newborn son and daughter for the first time since her collapse. The babies, now pink-cheeked and warm, rested comfortably against her chest. Lily stood right beside the wheelchair, holding her mother's hand, completing the circle of safety they had fought so hard to reach.
