Chapter 9 - The Reckoning
"NO!" Ethan screamed, a sound of utter devastation and madness. He lunged off his chair, throwing his full body weight into me.
We fell to the floor together, rolling across the cold concrete amidst the broken glass and spilled chemicals. Ethan’s strength was fading due to his illness, but he was driven by pure, unadulterated desperation. He pinned my wrists to the ground, his fingers digging into my skin, his eyes wide and bloodshot.
"You destroyed it!" he shrieked, his voice cracking. "That was my life! You just killed me!"
"You killed yourself eleven years ago," I gasped, fighting against his grip, wedging my knee between his hips and shoving him backward with all the strength left in my body.
He fell back against the primary control panel, his hand wildly catching a heavy steel wrench resting on the ledge. He raised it, his face distorted with rage, ready to strike down.
BANG.
The heavy steel door of the control room flew open.
"FBI! Don't move!" Agent Torres’s voice boomed through the room, accompanied by the blinding glare of tactical flashlights.
Ethan froze, the heavy wrench raised above his head, illuminated in the bright white beams. For a fraction of a second, he looked at Agent Torres, then down at me, and finally at the shattered glass on the floor containing his ruined cure.
He realized it was over. There were no more contingencies, no more secret laboratories, no more lies left to tell.
With a final, heartbroken groan, Ethan lowered the wrench and fell to his knees, burying his face in his trembling hands as federal officers swarmed the room, tackling him to the floor and pulling his arms behind his back in heavy steel cuffs.

Agent Torres rushed over, helping me to my feet. "Are you alright, Mara?"
I stood up, breathing heavily, pulling my coat tight around myself. I didn't look at Ethan as the officers dragged him out of the room. I looked at the console, where the emergency override system had dropped its lock. I reached out and slammed the green manual restore button, bringing the hospital's power grid, oxygen systems, and medical monitors instantly back to full, life-saving operational capacity.
