Chapter 7 - The Trap Laid

The threat in Ethan's final words became terrifyingly clear two hours later.
At 8:00 PM, the hospital's primary power grid suddenly failed. Emergency backup generators kicked in instantly, bathing the corridors in an eerie, dim red light. Simultaneously, the hospital's digital infrastructure was hit by a massive, sophisticated ransomware attack. Electronic door locks locked down, patient monitors flickered offline, and the computerized dosage pumps began malfunctioning across multiple floors.
"He's in the building's control system!" an IT director panicked in the hallway outside our room. "He’s overriding the HVAC and life-support sub-routines!"
Ethan hadn't run away from the city. He had followed us to the hospital, utilizing his high-level technical access to lay siege to the entire facility.
Agent Torres drew her sidearm, pulling me behind her as two armed tactical officers took positions outside Ivy's room. "Stay low, Mara! He's trying to create chaos to move through the building unnoticed!"
Through the glass window of the ICU door, I looked at Ivy. Her monitor was flashing critical warnings as the power fluctuations threatened to shut down her oxygen supply. The medical staff were scrambling frantically, trying to manually operate equipment in the dim emergency lighting.
My phone chimed again. A text message from the same unknown number:
ICU Unit 3, Valve Control Room B. 10 minutes, Mara. Alone. Or I shut down the entire hospital's oxygen distribution grid.
He wasn't trying to steal Ivy away under gunpoint; he was leveraging the lives of every sick child in that building to force me to walk to him.
"He texted you, didn't he?" Agent Torres asked, noticing my frozen expression.
"He wants me to go to Valve Control Room B," I lied quickly, knowing that if I told the FBI, they would try to execute a tactical assault—and Ethan would cut the oxygen before they reached him. "He says he'll give up if I talk to him alone."
"Absolute not," Torres said firmly. "We don't negotiate with targets in an active lockdown situation. Stay here. My team is sweeping the basement floors."
Torres turned to coordinate with her team, her attention diverted for just a few seconds. That was all I needed.

I leaned over Ivy's bed, kissed her forehead, and whispered, "Mommy's going to protect you."
Slipping out the side service door, I stepped into the shadowy, red-lit corridor, gripping a heavy metal scalpel I had covertly taken from a medical tray. For eleven years, I had played the role of the quiet, trusting wife. But that woman died the moment I saw those marks on my daughter's skin.
