Chapter 6 - The Hunt Begins

While the medical staff at St. Jude's worked frantically to stabilize Ivy’s immune system, the FBI deployed a tactical team to our suburban home. I begged to go with them, but Agent Torres insisted I remain at the hospital under armed protection.

From my phone, I watched the news updates in real-time. The quiet, tree-lined street where we had lived for a decade was suddenly filled with SWAT vans, flashing red-and-blue lights, and federal agents bursting through our front door with weapons drawn.

An hour later, Agent Torres returned to the hospital room. Her face was grim.

"He's gone," she announced concise. "He left the house minutes after you drove away. But he didn't just run—he wiped everything. The hard drives were drilled through, the physical files were burned in the fireplace, and the security cameras were disabled."

"Did you find the case?" I asked.

"No," she said. "He took the biological samples with him. But our forensics team found a hidden basement laboratory behind the furnace room. It was equipped with state-of-the-art cryogenic storage and surgical tools."

I covered my face with my hands, overwhelmed by the grotesque depth of the deception. The house where I had tucked my daughter into bed every night was built over a secret laboratory designed to exploit her.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed in my lap. It was an incoming call from an unknown, untraceable number.

Agent Torres immediately motioned for me to stay calm and signaled her team to begin tracing the line. "Answer it," she whispered. "Keep him talking."

With trembling fingers, I pressed the green button and raised the phone to my ear.

"Mara," Ethan’s voice came through the speaker—calm, smooth, completely unbothered, as if he were calling to remind me to pick up milk on my way home.

"Ethan..." I choked out, trying to keep my voice steady. "Where are you? What have you done to our daughter?"

"I know the police are with you, Mara," he said softly. "And I know what they've told you. They're using big words—'harvesting,' 'exploitation.' They don't understand the science. Everything I did, I did to preserve life."

"You poisoned her!" I screamed, losing my composure. "You used needle probes on an eight-year-old child! You lied to me for eleven years!"

"I loved you, Mara," he said, and for the first time, a flicker of genuine emotion crackled through the phone line. "That wasn't a lie. My feelings for you were the only real thing in this entire experiment. But my time is running out. My body is breaking down. I built Ivy to save me, but I never wanted to hurt you."

"If you loved us, come back," I pleaded, playing for time as Agent Torres gestured wildly for me to continue. "Surrender to the police. Let the doctors help you."

Ethan let out a soft, dry laugh. "The doctors can't help me. Only Ivy's code can. I have what I need from her, but the extraction was incomplete. I need the final stabilizing sequence, and I know you won't let me near her again voluntarily."

"You'll never touch her again," I said, cold fury replacing my fear. "I will die before I let you near my child."

May you like

"I know you would," Ethan replied quietly. "That's why I'm not coming for her. I'm going to make you bring her to me."

The line went dead.
