Chapter 8 - The Fall of Ethan Vance

For three long seconds, the room was dead silent save for the crackle of the fireplace.
Ethan stared at me as if he were looking at an apparition. The color drained completely from his face, his jaw dropping in absolute disbelief.
"Claire...?" he choked out, taking an involuntary step back. "You... you're in the hospital... you're..."
"I'm alive, Ethan," I said, taking another step into the room. "And so is Ryan."
Julia Vane was the first to recover. Her eyes narrowed into sharp slits as she looked past me toward the dark gardens. "How did she get in here? Where are the guards?!" She reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a small, sleek pistol.
"Put it down, Julia!" I commanded, my voice echoing with a strength I didn't know I possessed. "It's over!"
Ethan looked between me and Julia, his panic escalating into full-blown hysteria. "How are you standing?! The dosage... I calculated it! It was enough to kill a horse!"
"You always were precise with numbers, weren't you, Ethan?" I said, keeping my eyes locked on his. "The twelve million dollars from my father's trust. The double-indemnity life insurance policies you forged. The chicken in green sauce."
"Shut up!" Ethan yelled, his face contorting into a mask of rage. "You ruined everything! You were supposed to sign the papers three weeks ago! If you had just signed them, I wouldn't have had to do this!"
"You poisoned our son!" I screamed, the grief and rage exploding from my chest. "He was eight years old, Ethan! He trusted you! He called you Dad! You kissed his forehead while he was dying on the floor!"
"He was a parasite!" Ethan spat, completely losing his composure, his true, hollow self laid bare. "Just like you! A anchor dragging me down into your boring, mediocre life while I built an empire! I earned that money! Your father was an idiot who gave it to a brat who didn't even know how to invest it!"
"So you decided to murder us," I said, stepping closer, ensuring the small button camera captured every vein bulging in his neck, every hateful word dripping from his lips.
"Yes!" Ethan screamed, taking a threatening step toward me. "And nobody is going to care! You think coming here makes you a hero? You're weak, Claire! You're going to die right here, and this time, there won't be a 911 call!"
Julia raised her gun, pointing it straight at my chest. "Ethan, finish it. We dump them in the lake."
"With pleasure," Ethan snarled, lunging forward to grab my neck.
BOOM!
The large glass windows on both sides of the living room shattered simultaneously in a cascade of sparkling shards.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND!"
Flashbang grenades exploded in the courtyard with deafening cracks, filling the air with blinding white light and thick smoke. Tactical team officers in heavy body armor swarmed through the shattered windows, laser sights painting the room in crisscrossing red grids.
Julia dropped the pistol in terror, throwing her hands in the air as two officers tackled her to the ground, pulling her arms behind her back.
Ethan shrieked in shock, stumbling backward into the fireplace mantle, knocking over iron pokers and antique vases. He scrambled on his hands and knees through the broken glass, trying frantically to reach the rear exit.
"ETHAN VANCE! STAY DOWN!"
I stood still amidst the smoke and noise, watching calmly as four tactical officers pinned Ethan to the floor. His face was pressed hard against the hardwood, blood dripping from a small cut on his cheek where the broken glass had torn his skin.
Detective Sarah Miller stepped through the shattered entrance, flanked by federal agents in suits. She walked past the struggling Ethan and stopped right in front of me. She took off her jacket and gently placed it around my shivering shoulders.
"We got it all, Claire," Detective Miller said, her voice filled with deep respect. "Every word. Every confession. It's over."
Ethan raised his head from the floor, his eyes wide with wild, pathetic desperation as the handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
"Claire! Please!" he sobbed, his slick facade completely shattered. "Tell them it was a mistake! I was confused! I love you! I love Ryan! Claire, please save me!"

I looked down at the man I had once loved, the man who had shared my bed, my home, and my life. I felt no anger left for him—only a vast, cold disgust.
"Goodnight, Ethan," I said quietly.
