Chapter 2 - The Breach and the Rescue

The wooden door handle rattled again, slower this time, deliberate and chilling.

"Claire," Ethan’s voice drifted through the thin wood, smooth, composed, devoid of the panic a frantic husband should display upon discovering his poisoned family. "I know you're in there. Open the door. Let me help you."

I held my breath, pulling Ryan closer against my chest. My hands trembled as I pressed my palms over his ears, praying he wouldn't let out another whimpering breath. The poison inside me felt like molten glass circulating through my veins, dulling my limbs, stealing my breath, but the sheer, visceral instinct to protect my son anchored my mind to reality.

"The officers are turning into your neighborhood now," the dispatcher’s hushed voice crackled from the speaker of my phone, which I held tightly against my ear. "Do not open that door under any circumstances."

"I don't need to open it," Ethan whispered from the other side. "I have the key, Claire. You know where we keep the spare."

Metal clicked against metal.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I looked around the small bathroom—a single frosted window high up, too narrow for me, maybe barely wide enough for Ryan if he was fully conscious, but he was limp, his skin pale and slick with cold sweat. Beneath my elbow lay the thick plastic envelope I had retrieved from the trash. Whatever proof was inside, Ethan knew he had dropped it or that someone had tipped me off. He wasn't here to play the grieving husband anymore; he was here to finish what the dinner had started.

The lock turned with a sharp, definitive clack.

"Ethan, stop!" I rasped, my voice sounding like broken glass. "The police... are on their way..."

The door swung open.

Ethan stood in the doorway, framed by the dim light of the hallway. He didn't look like a monster. He wore his tailored charcoal coat, his hair combed neatly, his dark eyes entirely devoid of warmth. In his right hand, wrapped in a hand towel, was a heavy glass decanter from the living room bar.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Claire," Ethan said softly. His gaze dropped to the plastic envelope clutching in my fingers. His jaw tightened. "Who texted you?"

"It doesn't matter," I choked out, shifting my body to shield Ryan completely behind me. "They know. The dispatcher is on the phone right now."

Ethan chuckled, a cold, breathless sound. "A tragical domestic accident. Poisonous wild mushrooms in the sauce. And in your delirium, you slipped, struck your head against the porcelain... both of you." He raised the heavy decanter. "It’s tragic, really. But insurance pays double for accidental death."

"Ethan, please!" I sobbed, forcing my paralyzed legs to push backward against the tub. "He's your son!"

"He's an expense," Ethan corrected coldly, stepping over the threshold. "And a distraction."

He raised the decanter high. I closed my eyes, wrapping my arms tight around Ryan, bracing for the impact—

WOOO-WOOO-WOOO!

Red and blue strobes flared violently through the frosted bathroom window, illuminating the tiles in a frantic rhythm. Tires screeched in the driveway, followed by the heavy slam of car doors and the thunderous pounding of boots on the front porch steps.

"POLICE! OPEN UP!"

Ethan froze mid-swing. The composure on his face cracked, replaced by a sudden, feral panic. He looked at me, then at the window, then back at the envelope in my hands.

"THIS IS THE POLICE DEPARTMENT! WE HAVE A 911 OPEN-LINE CALL! BREAK IT DOWN!"

The front door splintered under a heavy kick. Ethan cursed under his breath, dropping the decanter onto the bathmat with a dull thud. He lunged forward, snatching violently at the plastic envelope in my hands. I screamed, pulling it back with every ounce of strength left in my dying muscles. The plastic ripped, papers scattering across the wet floor, but I held onto the core documents.

"Step away from them!" a booming voice yelled from the hallway.

Ethan spun around just as two uniformed officers burst into the bathroom, weapons drawn. "She's sick!" Ethan yelled instantly, throwing his hands up, instantly shifting his tone to hysterical panic. "Officer, thank God! My wife... she poisoned my son! She tried to kill us all!"

"GET ON THE GROUND! NOW!" the lead officer shouted, paying no mind to Ethan's performance.

Ethan complied slowly, kneeling with his hands behind his head, glaring at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Paramedics! We need medics in here now!" the second officer barked into his shoulder radio.

I felt the dark tide finally crashing over my mind. My vision narrowed to a pinpoint of light. I reached out, my fingers trembling, and managed to push the ripped papers against the officer's boot.

"He... he did it..." I whispered, my voice barely audible as the darkness swallowed me whole. "Save... my... baby..."
