Chapter 10 - A Brand New Sunrise

One year later.

The early morning sun rose over the horizon, painting the ocean waves in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep pink.

I sat on the wooden deck of our new beach house, holding a warm mug of coffee in my hands. The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the gentle rustle of sea grass in the yard.

Inside the house, I could hear the faint sound of footsteps and the clatter of a cereal bowl.

"Mom!" Ryan's voice called out cheerfully.

He burst through the sliding glass doors, wearing his favorite blue rocket t-shirt and shorts. He had grown three inches over the past year, his cheeks full of healthy color, his bright blue eyes laughing and full of life.

"Look what I drew!" he shouted, running over and sliding a sheet of paper onto my lap.

I picked up the drawing. It was a picture of a cozy house by the ocean. Underneath a giant, smiling sun were two figures holding hands—a little boy and his mom—surrounded by a bright golden shield.

Tears welled in my eyes, but for the first time in a very long time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

"It's beautiful, baby," I said, pulling him into a tight, warm hug. I buried my face in his soft hair, smelling the clean scent of ocean air and sweet strawberry shampoo. "It's the best picture you've ever drawn."

"Can we go down to the beach now?" Ryan asked, squirming excitedly in my arms. "The tide is down! I want to look for sea glass!"

"Go grab your sneakers," I smiled, letting him go. "I'll be right down."

He darted back inside, his laughter echoing through the sunlit hallway.

I picked up my phone from the small table beside my chair. There was a message waiting for me from Marcus. She was currently living in Europe, working with an international non-profit that helped victims of white-collar crime rebuild their lives.

"Thinking of you both today. Hope the sun is shining in your new home."

I smiled, typing back a short message:

"The sun is shining brighter than ever. Thank you for giving us our lives back."

I set the phone down and walked down the wooden steps of the deck, setting my feet onto the cool, soft sand.

Ryan was already running toward the edge of the water, chasing the receding waves, his happy shouts carrying over the ocean breeze. He turned back, waving his arms wildly, beckoning me to join him.

I took a deep, full breath of clean sea air, feeling the strength in my legs, the warmth of the sun on my skin, and the unbreakable bond of love that no monster could ever destroy.

I started running toward my son, leaving the shadows of the past far behind in the golden light of a brand-new day.
