Chapter 8 - The Judgment Day

Six months later, the final court hearing took place.
The courtroom was packed with journalists, family members, and curious onlookers. I sat at the plaintiff’s table, flanked by Andrew. I wore a bright, elegant royal blue dress. I looked healthy, radiant, and completely at peace.
Across the aisle sat Brian and Donna, both dressed in orange prison jumpsuits. They had been in custody for the past four months, unable to afford the multi-million-dollar bail set by the federal judge.
Their fall from grace had been swift and absolute.
Brian’s business had been liquidated to pay off his massive tax debts and bank fraud liabilities. Donna’s expensive home had been seized by the government. The high-society friends who had once filled her dining room had vanished like smoke, refusing to even take her calls.
Judge Evelyn Harrison, a no-nonsense woman with a reputation for absolute fairness, took her seat on the bench.
"We are here today to finalize the divorce and asset distribution of Sarah Evans and Brian Evans, as well as the custody of their minor child, Lily Evans," Judge Harrison announced.
She reviewed the pile of documents in front of her, nodding slowly.
"The evidence presented in this court over the past few months is some of the most egregious financial fraud and domestic abuse I have seen in my twenty years on the bench," Judge Harrison began, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "Mr. Evans, you did not just abuse your wife; you systematically attempted to strip her of her dignity, her financial security, and her child. You acted with a level of malice and arrogance that is truly shocking."
She turned her gaze to Donna. "And you, Donna Evans, actively participated in this conspiracy, prioritizing your own greed and status over the safety of your own granddaughter. Your actions are contemptible."
Judge Harrison picked up her gavel.
"Therefore, this court orders the following: First, the marriage of Sarah Evans and Brian Evans is officially dissolved. Second, Sarah Evans is awarded sole physical and legal custody of Lily Evans. Brian Evans’ parental rights are suspended indefinitely. He will have no contact, direct or indirect, with Lily Evans. Third, all remaining domestic assets, including the marital home, are awarded to Sarah Evans, completely free and clear of all debts, which are transferred solely to Brian Evans. Fourth, the hardware crypto-wallets and cash seized from the home safe are to be immediately liquidated to establish a trust fund for Lily’s education and future care."
Judge Harrison paused, looking directly at Brian and Donna.
"Furthermore, regarding the criminal charges: Brian Evans, you have been found guilty of domestic assault, perjury, bank fraud, and identity theft. I sentence you to fifteen years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Donna Evans, for your role in the financial conspiracy and money laundering, you are sentenced to five years in federal prison."
With a loud, final slam of her gavel, she announced: "This court is adjourned."
Donna began to weep loudly as the bailiffs approached her, cuffing her hands. Brian sat frozen, staring at the table, tears streaming down his face as the reality of his fifteen-year sentence finally sank in.
As they were led away, Brian looked back at me one last time. His eyes were filled with a mixture of regret and sorrow. But I simply turned away, looking at Andrew, who smiled and wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

"It's over, Sarah," he whispered. "You're free."
"We're free," I corrected him, a tear of pure joy escaping my eye.
