Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Brian’s Empire

The next morning, the fever had finally broken. Lily lay sleeping peacefully in her hospital bed, her breathing steady and her cheeks a healthy, normal pink. The IV fluids and antibiotics had worked wonders. I sat in the chair next to her, holding her tiny, soft hand, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief.

But my relief was short-lived. My phone rang on silent. It was Andrew.

"Sarah, how is Lily?" he asked, his voice tired but focused.

"The fever is down to 98.6," I whispered. "She’s sleeping. The doctors say we might be discharged by this afternoon."

"Good. Because we need to move fast," Andrew said. "Brian was released on bail early this morning. Donna posted his bond. The court granted our temporary emergency restraining order, so he cannot come within 500 feet of you, Lily, or the hospital. But he’s desperate, Sarah. And desperate men do desperate things."

"What do you mean?"

"Last night, after you fell asleep, my team did a deep dive into his company’s financial records. Remember how he said his consulting firm, Evans & Associates, was struggling? It’s a complete lie. The company is highly profitable, but he’s been draining the business accounts. He’s been funneling cash into a secondary LLC called 'D&B Holdings'—which stands for Donna and Brian."

My heart sank. "Donna is involved in this?"

"More than involved. She’s the registered agent of D&B Holdings," Andrew explained. "Over the last two years, Brian has transferred over $2.4 million into that account. And here’s the kicker: last week, he initiated a transfer of $1.5 million from D&B Holdings to an offshore bank account in Belize. The transfer is scheduled to clear in three days."

I gasped, covering my mouth. "He’s trying to steal our entire life savings. He’s going to leave us with nothing, just like he threatened last night."

"Exactly. He’s planning to flee the country, likely taking Donna with him, leaving you with the mortgage on a house that he secretly refinanced behind your back. He forged your signature on those refinancing documents, Sarah. That’s bank fraud. A federal offense."

I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me. The man I had shared a bed with for six years, the father of my child, had been systematically planning to ruin me financially while physically abusing me.

"What do we do?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"We strike first," Andrew said, his tone resolute. "We need physical evidence of the forgery and the offshore accounts. The digital footprints are there, but we need the physical files, the hard drives, and the token keys for the offshore accounts. He likely keeps them in his home office, in the floor safe behind his desk."

"I don't know the code to that safe," I said, panic rising. "He never let me near it. He told me it was only for confidential client documents."

"I figured as much," Andrew said. "But I have a forensic accountant and a private investigator ready to go. Since you are still legally married and the house is in both of your names, you have every right to enter the property. Brian cannot be there because of the restraining order. We are going to that house today, Sarah. We are going to get those files before he realizes we know about them."

"But what if Donna is there?"

"If Donna is there, she will be removed by the police. The restraining order covers the marital home as well. Brian has been legally evicted from the property pending the divorce proceedings, and Donna has no legal right to be there."

I looked down at Lily, who was beginning to stir. Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled weakly at me.

"Mommy?" she whispered.

"I'm here, my sweet girl," I said, kissing her hand. "How do you feel?"

"Better. Can we go home now?"

"Soon, baby. Soon. But first, Mommy and Uncle Andrew have to take care of some grown-up things. You’re going to stay with Aunt Claire for a little bit, okay?" Claire was Andrew’s wife, a warm, loving woman whom Lily adored.

"Okay," Lily murmured, closing her eyes again.

May you like

I looked out the window at the gray, overcast sky. The storm was far from over, but for the first time in years, I didn't feel weak. I didn't feel like the submissive, quiet wife who shrank under Donna's critical gaze and Brian's subtle emotional abuse.

I was a mother fighting for her child’s future. And God help anyone who stood in my way.
