Chapter 5 - Whispers of the Syndicate

Over the next two weeks, Victor's estate became my entire world. It was a sprawling, fortress-like mansion hidden behind high wrought-iron gates and dense rows of ancient oak trees, situated on the edge of Lake Michigan. Armed guards patrolled the perimeter, yet inside the walls, the atmosphere was remarkably serene.
I was tended to by a kind, elderly housekeeper named Mrs. Gable, who brought me nourishing soups, fresh fruit, and books from Victor's massive library. Every afternoon, Victor would visit for an hour, sitting quietly by my bedside to talk about art, history, or simply how my arm was healing.
He never pressured me, never made me feel like a burden, and treated me with a profound, old-world respect that I had never experienced in my entire life.
One afternoon, as my strength began to return, I walked out onto the second-floor balcony, wrapping a cashmere shawl tightly around my shoulders. The crisp autumn breeze whipped across the lake, carrying the scent of pine and falling leaves.
Footsteps echoed softly behind me.
“You shouldn't be standing out in the cold yet, Rachel,” Victor's voice murmured as he stepped out onto the balcony, holding a steaming cup of chamomile tea.
“I'm tired of staying in bed,” I smiled, taking the cup from his hands. Their fingers brushed briefly, sending a sudden, electric shiver up my spine. I blushed, looking away toward the crashing waves of the lake.
Victor leaned against the stone railing beside me. “You're healing faster than the doctors expected. That's the resilience I told you about.”
“Victor... I can't stay here forever,” I said quietly, the reality of my situation finally catching up with me. “I don't have a job, I don't have an apartment, and technically, I don't even exist anymore. What am I going to do?”
Victor turned his head, looking at me with absolute seriousness.
“You can stay here as long as you wish,” he said without hesitation. “Or, if you want a fresh start, I can set you up anywhere in the world. Paris, Florence, Kyoto—name a city, and it's yours.”
“And you?” I asked before I could stop myself.
Victor looked surprised for a fraction of a second, his dark eyes locking onto mine.
“My place is here, in Chicago,” he replied softly. “This city is my empire, and my enemies are never truly asleep. But... if you wanted to stay here, in Chicago, close to me... I wouldn't object.”
Before I could answer, a sharp chime echoed from the interior hallway. Marcus stepped out onto the balcony, his face pale and tense.

“Boss,” Marcus interrupted respectfully, keeping his head bowed. “We have a serious problem. The Outfit on the South Side knows you brought a civilian into your inner circle. And Dante Rossi is asking questions.”
Victor's entire demeanor shifted in a heartbeat. The gentle protector vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless, calculating mob boss who commanded the underworld of Chicago.
