Chapter 1 - The Shattered Silence

“Can you... please save me?”
The words barely escaped my lips, but the moment I whispered them, I knew there was absolutely no turning back.
My cell phone trembled in my blood-stained hand as I pressed it hard against my ear. Every single breath sent fire shooting through my ribs, and my left arm hung at a sickening angle, so badly broken that the pain had almost become unreal. My body had simply stopped trying to comprehend what had just happened.
Only a few minutes earlier, my husband had grabbed my wrist during another one of his arguments.
At first, he squeezed until hot tears filled my eyes.
Then he violently twisted it.
The loud crack echoed through our apartment.
He didn't even blink.
He just smiled.
Afterward, he casually walked into the kitchen, poured himself another bourbon, and acted as if snapping my arm had simply relieved the frustration he'd been carrying all day long.
For five long years, I had learned exactly how to survive him. I knew when to stay quiet, when to completely avoid eye contact, and how to make myself practically invisible before his temper exploded. But that night, something inside me finally shattered.
Not just another bone.
My fear.
I locked myself inside the bathroom and slid down the cold tile wall. Fighting through the agonizing pain with my good hand, I desperately searched my purse until my trembling fingers found the thick black business card I had hidden for months.
Stamped in gold foil were only a name and a phone number.
Victor Romano.
The mob boss everyone in Chicago feared.
People didn't make jokes about Victor Romano. They instinctively lowered their voices whenever they spoke his name. His reputation walked into every room long before he ever did, and anyone who actually called him knew their life would never be the same afterward.
A violent crash suddenly shook the bathroom door.
“Rachel!” my husband screamed from the hallway, his drunken voice thick with pure rage. “Open this damn door!”
I flinched as another sharp bolt of pain shot through my broken arm.
The brass doorknob rattled violently.
“Who the hell are you calling?” he shouted. “You really think someone's coming to save you?”
My trembling fingers dialed the ten-digit number.
Months earlier, I had met Victor during a graveyard shift at the downtown diner where I worked. He had walked in with three silent men in dark suits, and the entire restaurant seemed to completely stop breathing.
I was so nervous that I accidentally spilled hot coffee near his table.
I fully expected him to explode.
Instead, he calmly looked up at me.
“It's alright,” he said softly.
When he finally left, I found the heavy black card tucked beneath the check.
On the back, five handwritten words changed absolutely everything.
If you ever need help.
I had read those words hundreds of times over the months.
I never imagined I would actually have to use them.
The phone rang once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone picked up.
“Talk.”
His voice was calm, steady, and somehow significantly more terrifying than shouting.
My throat completely tightened.
“I... I don't know if you remember me,” I whispered into the receiver. “I'm the waitress from the diner.”
There was a brief, heavy silence on the line.
Then he quietly spoke my name.
“Rachel.”
Hearing him actually remember me almost made me break down sobbing.
Before I could even respond, my husband slammed his shoulder into the bathroom door again. The cheap wood splintered loudly around the deadbolt, and Victor heard every single second of it.
“Who's there?” he asked, his voice suddenly dropping to a freezing chill.
“My husband.”
“What did he do?”
I looked down at my mangled, twisted arm.
“He... he broke it.”
The silence that followed felt entirely different.
It wasn't hesitation.
It was pure, unfiltered fury held under perfect control.
“Give me your address.”
I whispered the street name and apartment number while another deafening crash shook the doorframe.
The wood cracked down the middle.
My husband just laughed.
“How long?” I asked, barely able to pull in a breath.
Victor didn't hesitate for a second.

“Stay alive for eight minutes.”
At that exact moment, the bathroom door violently exploded inward.
