Chapter 4 - Blue Lights and Broken Bonds

The flashing red and blue lights painted the manicured hedges and terrified faces of our guests in frantic, strobing hues. Car doors flew open, and three uniformed police officers, led by a tall, stern-looking female detective with a badge clipped to her belt, marched straight through the side gate into the backyard.
"Police! Stay where you are! Nobody move!" the detective commanded, her hand resting firmly on the holster at her hip. Her sharp eyes darted across the chaotic scene: the ruined cake, the foam belly resting in the frosting, Alex breathing heavily against the wall, and Emily standing defiantly with her arms crossed.
"Detective!" Alex called out, stepping forward past my brother Luke. "Over here! She’s the one! Her name is Emily Vance. She planned a child abduction and drugged my wife at St. Jude's Hospital just hours ago!"
"Hold on, hold on, everybody calm down," the detective said, raising a hand as she strode into the center of the yard. She glanced at Emily, then down at the grotesque silicone contraption sitting in the dessert debris, and finally back at Alex. "I’m Detective Miller. We received an automated alert from St. Jude’s security system linked to an attempted security breach and pharmaceutical tampering report filed about fifteen minutes ago. Who called 911?"
"I did," my father said, stepping forward with his shoulders slumped. He looked ten years older than he had an hour ago. He pointed a trembling finger at Emily. "That's my daughter. She... she faked a pregnancy, and according to my son-in-law, she broke into the hospital records and targeted our newborn granddaughter."
Emily’s demeanor shifted instantly. The arrogant, unbothered villain vanished, replaced in a split second by a trembling, tearful damsel in distress. Her bottom lip quivered, and she let out a soft, heartbreaking sob as she pointed directly at Alex.
"Officer, please! You have to help me!" Emily cried, stumbling toward Detective Miller with her hands outstretched, playing the part to absolute perfection. "My brother-in-law is insane! He attacked me! He punched me right in the stomach without any reason! Look at what he did to my dress! He’s making up these crazy, delusional stories because he hates me!"
Detective Miller looked at Emily, then glanced at Alex, her expression hardening. "Sir, did you strike this woman?"
The air in the garden grew so thick you could cut it with a knife. Forty pairs of eyes turned back to Alex.
Alex didn't flinch. He squared his shoulders, looked Detective Miller dead in the eye, and said, "Yes, Officer. I punched her. But look at what she was wearing." He pointed a finger down at the foam belly sitting in the cake. "That isn't a pregnant belly. That’s a prosthetic. She’s been faking a pregnancy for eight months to pull off a kidnapping scheme. Check her phone. Check her cloud storage right now. The evidence of her conspiracy, the hospital floor plans, the wire transfers, and the forged discharge papers are all unlocked on her device."
Detective Miller’s gaze shifted to the silicone prop on the cake table. She walked over, picked it up with two fingers, and inspected the industrial-grade Velcro straps and molded foam. A look of profound disgust crossed her face. She set it down carefully and turned to one of the uniformed officers behind her.
"Officer Davis, secure her phone immediately. Do not let her touch the screen," Detective Miller ordered crisply.
Emily’s theatrical tears stopped dead. Her face hardened back into a mask of pure fury as two police officers stepped up to her on either side.
"You can't do this!" Emily screamed, thrashing as the cuffs clicked around her wrists with a sharp, metallic snap. "Dad! Mark! Luke! Are you going to let them arrest me? Chloe, tell them! Tell them it's a misunderstanding!"
None of us moved. None of us spoke. My mother kept her face buried in her hands, weeping softly, while my father turned his head away, unable to bear the sight of his favorite child being led away in handcuffs.
"Emily Vance," Detective Miller recited coldly, reading her rights as she was guided backward toward the side gate. "You are being detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, pharmaceutical tampering, and identity fraud. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
As they hauled her past the shattered balloon arches and the tables piled high with unused baby gifts, Emily threw one final, venomous glare in my direction.

"You'll regret this, Chloe," she snarled, her voice echoing off the brick walls of the house. "You and Alex both. This isn't over!"
The side gate slammed shut behind them, cutting off her voice. The heavy, suffocating silence rushed back into the yard, leaving us standing in the wreckage of a lie that had almost cost us everything.
