Chapter 2 - The Digital Ledger of Deception

The phone screen cast a harsh, cold light over my father’s manicured lawn, illuminating the stunned, pale faces of forty guests who suddenly looked like statues. My brothers, Mark and Luke, stepped back from Alex as if he were carrying a contagion, their hands hovering uselessly in the air.

"What... what is that?" My mother’s voice cracked, dropping the phone she had been holding to dial emergency services. It hit the grass with a muffled thud.

I looked down at the screen. The image wasn't just a photograph; it was a digital collage, a meticulous dossier. There was Emily, smiling next to a nurse in scrubs outside St. Jude’s Maternity Ward. There was a scanned document with an official letterhead. And right below it, a bank statement showing a wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars from an account I didn't recognize to an entity labeled CradleTrust Adoption Agency.

"She’s been faking the pregnancy for eight months," Alex said, his voice raw, tearing through the quiet like broken glass. He wiped a streak of sweat from his forehead, glaring down at my sister. "She told everyone she was carrying a miracle baby through a private surrogate arrangement that fell through at the last minute, forcing her to 'carry it herself' due to legal complications. Total lies. All of it."

Emily scrambled backward, her sky-blue dress stained with white frosting and crushed strawberries. The foam prosthetic belly sat grotesquely crumpled against her waist, half-exposed where my hand had torn the delicate silk fabric. Gone was the gentle, ethereal mother-to-be. In her place was a stranger with hardened eyes and lips pulled back in a snarl.

"You ruin everything, Alex," Emily spat, her voice losing its high-pitched, fragile quiver and dropping into a cold, venomous register. "You always have to stick your nose where it doesn't belong. You were supposed to be at the hardware store!"

"I forgot my wallet, Emily," Alex shot back, his chest heaving. "I came back home, and I found your laptop open on the kitchen island. You left your cloud synced. Messages, medical records, financial wire receipts, and a complete schedule of maternity discharges for this upcoming Monday."

He turned the screen toward my father, who looked as though he had been struck across the face with a lead pipe.

"Ask her, Robert," Alex demanded, his eyes flashing with a desperate urgency. "Ask her whose baby she was planning to check out of the hospital tomorrow morning under a forged identity."

My father took a shaky step forward, his hand trembling as he pointed a finger at his golden-child daughter. "Emily... tell me he's lying. Tell me this is some sick joke, a prank for social media, something stupid—"

"It's not a joke, Dad," Emily hissed, finally hauling herself up to her feet. She didn't bother fixing the foam belly; she ripped the entire apparatus off her body, throwing the squishy, silicone-and-foam contraption onto the wedding-tier cake. It landed squarely in the middle of the buttercream frosting, looking like a grotesque, fleshy meteorite. "If you all weren't so blind, you would have seen how miserable I am. Mark has his perfect corporate career. Luke is living downtown with his penthouse. And I? I needed a family. I needed a child to secure my future with Julian."

"Julian?" I echoed, the name tasting like ash in my mouth. "Julian is your ex-fiancé. He dumped you two years ago because you drained his bank accounts!"

"Julian and I are back together," Emily corrected with a chilling, unapologetic smirk. "And Julian wants a child. But he told me he wouldn't marry me unless I gave him a newborn heir right away. I couldn't carry one. Time was running out. So... I found an alternative."

The wind rustled through the maple trees above us, carrying the distant sound of a siren wailing miles away. My mother let out a low, animalistic moan and collapsed onto my brother Mark’s shoulder.

"An alternative," I whispered, stepping closer to my sister, the woman I had shared a bedroom with, the sister I had defended through every bad boyfriend and broken promise. "Emily, stealing a baby isn't an alternative. That’s kidnapping. That’s human trafficking."

"It's not kidnapping if the mother doesn't want it," Emily shot back defensively, her chin tilted up with supreme arrogance.

Alex lunged forward again, but Luke caught him around the waist, holding him back. "Don't touch her, man. Let the police handle her. I just called them back."

"The police won't do anything yet," Alex said grimly, looking directly at me. "Because she hasn't executed the final step. The hospital discharge is scheduled for tomorrow at 8:00 AM. But look at the second photo on that screen, Chloe. Look at whose baby she targeted."

I reached out, my fingers trembling as I took Alex’s phone from his hand. The screen felt hot against my skin. I swiped to the next image, and the breath left my lungs in a violent rush.

It was a picture of a newborn bassinet in a hospital room. A tiny pink bundle wrapped in a striped blanket. And taped to the clear plastic chart holder at the foot of the crib was a name tag.

Baby Girl Smith-Miller. Born: Yesterday. Parents: Alex and Chloe.
