Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

My husband drove his fist into my eight-months-pregnant sister’s stomach in the middle of her baby shower. For three full minutes, with pink and blue balloons swaying over my parents’ backyard and cake smeared across the gift table, I thought I had married a monster.
Emily was sitting in the center chair like a queen in a sky-blue dress and flower crown, one hand on her belly, soaking up every tear, every photo, every ‘finally.’ My mom kept saying, ‘I can’t believe I’m going to be a grandmother.’ My dad wouldn’t stop taking pictures. More than forty people were there. Everyone was watching Emily glow.
Then Alex came through the side gate. Sweat-soaked shirt. White knuckles around his phone. Face like he’d seen something dead.
I walked toward him and said, ‘Alex, what’s wrong?’ He didn’t even look at me. He stared straight at my sister and said, ‘Get away from her.’
The singing died. Emily’s smile vanished. She grabbed her belly with both hands and whispered, ‘What are you doing here?’
Alex kept walking. I felt my chest tighten. ‘Alex, stop.’
He looked at her, said, ‘I’m sorry,’ and slammed his fist into the front of her dress.
My world exploded. Emily crashed backward into the dessert table. Balloons popped. Gifts spilled. My mother screamed. My brothers threw Alex against the wall. My father yelled for 911. I beat on my husband’s chest and screamed, ‘She’s pregnant! You animal!’
Emily curled on the grass, wailing, ‘My baby! Don’t touch me!’ Even when our retired-nurse neighbor dropped beside her, Emily kicked at her and shrieked, ‘Don’t touch me!’
Then Alex, pinned against the wall, shouted the sentence that froze my blood. ‘LOOK AT HER STOMACH!’
I didn’t want to. I wanted handcuffs. I wanted sirens. I wanted there to be no explanation for what I had just seen.
But I turned. And where he’d hit her, her belly had caved in. Not bruised. Not swollen. A deep, ugly dent. Like someone had punched a couch cushion. And it stayed there.
I walked toward my sister on shaking legs. ‘Emily… let me see.’
Her eyes changed. Not pain. Not fear. Pure rage. ‘No,’ she snapped.
That was the moment I knew. I slid my hand under the fabric of her dress. And touched foam. Straps. Velcro.
No baby. No pregnancy. Just a fake belly strapped to my sister while my whole family stood there with cake plates in their hands.
The backyard went so silent I could hear my mother sobbing into the phone. My brothers let go of Alex. My father stopped breathing through his mouth. And Emily didn’t look ashamed. She looked furious that we had ruined something.
Then Alex lifted his phone and said, ‘That’s not even the worst part.’
I turned to him slowly. His screen was open. His hand was shaking. And he said, ‘Emily was going to steal a newborn tomorrow.’

That was when my sister’s face changed for real. Not guilt. Not panic. Rage. Because he was telling the truth.
And when Alex unlocked the next file on his phone, my entire family leaned in. Emily tried to stand. My father yelled her name. And the first photo on that screen made my stomach drop.
