Chapter 6 - The Fallout and the New Beginning

Three days after Daniel's surgery, I returned to our house for the first time accompanied by a police escort and a locksmith. The authorities had finished their forensic sweep, and the yellow crime scene tape had been removed from the front porch.

Walking through the front door felt strange. The air inside didn't feel heavy anymore; the oppressive, suffocating shadow that Carlos had cast over every room for years seemed to have vanished completely.

In the garage, the workbench had been pulled away from the wall. The concrete floor beneath it was patched where the hidden compartment had been dismantled by investigators. On top of the workbench sat a box containing our personal belongings that had been cataloged and cleared.

I packed up Carlos's remaining clothes into black trash bags and hauled them out to the curb. Every item I threw away felt like shedding a layer of heavy armor I had worn for far too long.

When I got back to the hospital, Daniel was sitting up in bed, happily playing a handheld video game—a gift from Detective Miller, who had stopped by earlier that morning with an update on the legal case.

"Mom! Look!" Daniel beamed, holding up the screen. "I beat level four!"

I laughed, a genuine, unburdened sound that I hadn't heard myself make in years. I sat down on the edge of his bed and wrapped my arms around him, pulling him close.

"That's my boy," I said, kissing the top of his head. "Are you ready to come home tomorrow?"

Daniel’s smile widened, lighting up his entire face. "Can we paint my bedroom blue? Dad always said it was a stupid color, but I want it blue."

May you like

"We can paint it any color you want, buddy," I promised, resting my chin against his hair. "Sky blue, ocean blue, whatever you choose."

Later that evening, while Daniel slept soundly, I sat in the armchair by the window and reviewed the paperwork provided by my newly appointed divorce attorney. The financial assets Carlos had tried to hide had been seized by federal authorities, and restitution orders had been filed in our favor. The house was officially transferred entirely into my name, free and clear of mortgages or liens. Carlos was being held without bail at the county detention center, facing multiple felony counts that guaranteed he wouldn't be seeing the outside of a prison cell for a very long time.
