Chapter 5 - Waking Up Safe

The room was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm glow of a bedside lamp. Daniel lay propped up on a stack of white pillows, an IV line taped securely to the back of his small hand. His face was still pale, but the greenish, sickly pallor that had haunted him for weeks was gone. His breathing was deep, even, and peaceful.
I pulled a chair right up beside the bed, carefully taking his uninjured hand in mine. It was warm.
"Hey, buddy," I whispered, brushing a stray lock of dark hair off his forehead.
Daniel’s eyelids fluttered. He blinked a few times against the light, adjusting to the room before his gaze locked onto mine. A look of sudden panic crossed his features, his small fingers twitching in my grasp.
"Mom... the house? Did we..."
"Shh, baby. Listen to me," I interrupted softly, leaning in close so he could hear every word clearly. "The house is safe. We are safe. Carlos is gone, and he is never, ever coming back."
Daniel stared at me, searching my face for any sign of doubt or deception. Finding none, the tension slowly drained out of his small frame. He let out a long, shuddering sigh, closing his eyes as a single, quiet tear rolled down his cheek.
"I'm sorry, Mom," he whispered. "I tried to be strong. I didn't want him to yell at you."
"Oh, my sweet boy," I choked out, tears spilling over my own eyelashes as I pressed his hand against my cheek. "You were too strong. You shouldn't have had to carry that burden alone. But you did it. You saved us."
Just then, the door clicked open, and Dr. Harrison poked his head in with a gentle smile. "How is our champion doing?"
"He's doing wonderful, Doctor," I said, smiling through my tears. "Just resting."

"Good. Vitals are stable, and if he continues like this, we can look at discharging him in a couple of days," Dr. Harrison said, checking the monitor. "He'll need some follow-up care and emotional support counseling to help process everything, but physically, he's going to make a full and complete recovery."
Over the next forty-eight hours, the hospital room transformed from a place of clinical dread into a sanctuary of healing. Friends and neighbors—people I had lost touch with because Carlos liked to keep us isolated—began sending messages, flowers, and cards once the local news broke about the arrest of Carlos Ramirez for financial fraud and child endangerment. The community was horrified by what Carlos had done, but they rallied around us with an overwhelming wave of love and support.
