Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

The morning of our mountain trip arrived with a clear, brilliant blue sky and a crisp, refreshing breeze that carried the promise of adventure.
Our suitcases were packed and zipped shut by the front door. Daniel was running around the living room making sure he hadn't forgotten his favorite sketchbook, his sneakers squeaking lightly against the freshly polished hardwood floors.
I stood in the kitchen for a final check, running my hand along the smooth, clean granite countertop. My reflection in the window showed a woman who looked different from the one who had driven frantically to a strange clinic months ago—stronger, surer, and entirely at peace.
"Mom! Are you ready?" Daniel called out, bursting into the kitchen with his backpack slung over both shoulders and a baseball cap perched backward on his head.
"Almost, captain," I said, turning around with a smile. "Do you have your jacket?"
"Packed and zipped!"
"Then I guess we're ready for takeoff."
We walked out to the driveway together, the morning sun warming our faces. I unlocked the car doors, tossed our bags into the trunk, and slid into the driver’s seat. Daniel climbed into the passenger seat, immediately reaching for the radio to find his favorite upbeat station.
As I backed out of the driveway, I glanced in the rearview mirror one last time. Our house stood tall and bright against the morning light, surrounded by green grass and blooming flowers—a safe haven where we had weathered the worst of storms and emerged into the light.

"Next stop, the mountains!" Daniel cheered, pumping his fist in the air as our favorite song filled the car.
I smiled, shifted into drive, and pressed gently on the gas pedal. The road ahead was wide, open, and entirely our own.
