Chapter 9 - Rebuilding a Life

A year passed.
Audrey’s life transformed in ways she had never thought possible. Without the constant emotional drain of the Parker family, her career skyrocketed. She was promoted to Senior Vice President of Operations at her firm, receiving a massive equity stake and a beautiful new corner office overlooking the Atlanta skyline.
She used her newfound free time to invest in herself. She joined a running club, traveled to Italy for two weeks by herself, and started volunteering at a local shelter that helped women rebuild their lives after leaving abusive or manipulative relationships.
She looked younger, felt healthier, and smiled with a genuine warmth that had been missing for a decade. She had completely reclaimed her identity as Audrey Vance.
One Saturday morning, while walking her new golden retriever puppy through Piedmont Park, she ran into an old acquaintance of Trevor’s—a guy named Dave who used to run in the same social circles.
"Audrey? Wow, you look incredible!" Dave said, genuinely stunned by her radiant appearance.
"Thanks, Dave. Life is good. How have you been?"
"Good, good. Hey, I heard about the split. Man, Trevor really blew it, didn't he?" Dave shook his head. "Last I heard, he’s working an entry-level sales job and living with a roommate in a terrible apartment outside the city. His mom keeps trying to get him to date wealthy women, but word traveled fast about what happened at that resort in Florida. Nobody wants to touch that family with a ten-foot pole."

Audrey felt a mild sense of vindication, but mostly, she felt nothing at all. Trevor and his family were just characters in a poorly written book she had finished reading a long time ago.
"I wish him the best," Audrey said politely, before bidding Dave goodbye and continuing her walk through the sunlit park. She really did wish him the best—as long as that "best" was nowhere near her.
