Chapter 8 - The Falling Dominos

The next three months were a whirlwind of legal battles and sudden realizations for the Parker family. Without Audrey’s financial backing, the structural flaws in their lives began to cave in rapidly.

Trevor tried to contest the divorce, demanding alimony and a share of the condo. However, Marcus was an absolute shark in the courtroom. He presented years of financial records showing that Trevor had consistently contributed zero dollars to the household expenses, while hiding his own income and running up debts that Audrey had repeatedly cleared. The judge, thoroughly unimpressed by Trevor's sense of entitlement, denied his requests for support and ordered him to vacate the property immediately.

With no place to live, Trevor was forced to move back into his parents' spare bedroom.

But things weren't going well there, either. Russell’s financial instability had caught up with him. Without the "loans" Audrey used to provide to cover their property taxes and medical bills, Diane and Russell were forced to downsize their home, selling their suburban house and moving into a small, cramped townhouse.

Brooke and Scott fared no better. When the lease on Brooke's luxury SUV came due, she called Audrey's number, only to find it permanently blocked. Without Audrey to co-sign or provide the cash injection she had promised, the dealership repossessed the vehicle. Brooke was forced to drive an old, dented sedan, much to her immense horror and social embarrassment.

One evening, Audrey was sitting in her newly redecorated, sparkling clean condo, enjoying a glass of wine, when she received an email from Diane. It was a long, rambling message, stripped of all its usual arrogance.

“Audrey, I am writing to apologize for my behavior at the resort. It was uncalled for. Family should stick together through hard times. Trevor is miserable, and we are all struggling. If you could find it in your heart to drop the legal proceedings and meet with Trevor, we could try to rebuild this family...”

Audrey read the email, a small smile playing on her lips. They still didn't get it. They didn't miss her. They missed her money.

She hit the delete button and emptied her trash folder.
