Chapter 6 - The Paperwork of Freedom

Audrey spent the afternoon lounging by the adult-only pool, a crisp glass of white wine in hand, listening to the gentle crash of the waves. For the first time in her adult life, her phone was quiet. She had blocked Trevor, Diane, Brooke, and Russell.

However, she hadn't completely disconnected from the world. Instead, she used the resort’s high-speed Wi-Fi to send an email to a close friend from college, a top-tier family law attorney in Atlanta named Marcus Vance (no relation, just a happy coincidence of names).

“Marcus, it’s Audrey. I need you to draw up divorce papers. I want them ready by Monday morning. I’m taking everything that belongs to me, and I want a clean, absolute break.”

Marcus replied within ten minutes: “It’s about time, Audrey. I’ll have the paperwork drafted before you land. Enjoy your weekend. Let me handle the heavy lifting.”

As she closed her laptop, Audrey felt a profound sense of peace. She realized that she wasn't sad. She wasn't grieving the loss of her marriage because, in reality, she had been single for a very long time. She had been a bank account and a safety net, but never a wife.

That evening, she took herself on a long walk along the beach. The sand was cool beneath her feet, and the ocean air felt cleansing. She watched the sunset alone, but for the first time, she didn't feel lonely. She felt complete.

When she returned to the lobby later that night to pick up a bottle of water, she ran into Owen again.

"Good evening, Ms. Vance," Owen greeted her with a warm smile. "I trust your afternoon was peaceful?"

"It was wonderful, Owen. Thank you. Did our... guests manage to sort out their affairs?"

Owen leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. "It took them nearly four hours to clear the balance. Mr. Parker senior had to call three different credit card companies to raise his limit. They eventually departed in a rather crowded rideshare vehicle. I believe they relocated to an airport hotel near Jacksonville."

Audrey smiled. "Perfect. Thank you for your assistance, Owen. You’ve been an absolute lifesaver."

"It was an honor, Ms. Vance. Enjoy the rest of your luxury stay."
